No one seems to have had a straightforward recovery

I'm begining to question whether I should go ahead with my RTHR in 2 weeks time as every discussion here seems to be more and more scary. Does anyone have a straightforward recovery without all the complications? There are so many things that can go wrong it seems I'm beginning to wonder if my hip is bad enough for surgery. I don't want to end up in an even worse state

Hi Catrin. I know I am only 6 days post op but so far it is all good. My surgeon was amazing and thr is such a common op albeit a major one and to be honest I have only heard good things. Obviously there will be niggles in the recovery  but all I can say is that all my previous back pain has gone. It's just a case of strengthening the muscles around the new hip. I am so glad I had it done.  Talk your fears through with your doctor and hopefully get some kind of reassurance. Wishing you good luck xx

One thing I am amazed at is how many young people under 60 are having THR done . I am just 60 and thought I was young having it !

I am 81 and so glad I had the op Dec 8th. Apart from a large blister on my heel caused by DVT stockings I have had little trouble. Only use a stick if I go out purely for back up in an emergency. Go for it & follow the surgeon & physios advice.

Dear Catrin, Is there really such a thing as a straightforward  recovery???  Please do not let this forum scare you.  This forum has helped me in so many ways.  I am 43 post op almost 5 weeks RTHR.  Reading all the topics have given me hope in my own recovery.  I only have minor issues, but reading someone elses minor or major issue has helped me in the "do's and don'ts" of hip surgery.  I refer to this site daily and you will find yourself smiling when someone else can achieve something they couldn't do yesterday......  Good luck with your surgery and i wish you a speedy recovery.....  Ginny USA

    Hi Catrin,

I am 43 and due to have RTHR in April.  I too have made myself sick with worry over whether its the right thing to do with all the horror stories!  I ride horses for leisure and work (other work would be available) and ski/walk etc and although in pain constantly and on high dose painkillers the fear of what life may be like if it goes wrong is causing me to think about putting it off.  Thanks to those that addressed my fears and eased my worry!

    Good luck

    Hi catrin

Im 55 male, from Canada Iam 9 weeks post left thr now. before surgery I was like you not sure did not want to be worse off after surgery and scared.  But am glad I did it I feel great!  before surgery was in pain taking all kinds of meds to get through the day could hardly walk, now am walking, no pain.  the first couple weeks after surgery are uncomfortable but nothing that patients and good pain control will get you through it, every day seemed to get better. I am having my right thr on March 9 2015, and am still some what scared too but I know I will be fine and better  quality of life and better mobility. It is well worth the trouble you will recover and never look back too.

Catrin, everything is a risk. Not doing the surgery has its own risks as well. I wish I had found this forum before my two THR's so that I could have known what questions to ask my surgeon.

I have experienced both sides of the coin. My first was perfect and easy and my second one was a nightmare which I am having revised on the 26th this month. I could not have survived the aftermath of my second THR if it had not been for this forum.

So I guess this makes me neutral? I hope the best for you! And we will be here to cheer you on!

    Hugs

Catrin, Ultimately it is your decision as you will have to live with the outcome, but truly I was a scared as you, reading this site and others, but what I've come to realize is that people don't write her to scare anyone, but just to open eyes to the reality of this or any surgery.

I myself had a great outcome, no pain, just discomfort from sleeping issues and of course bathroom issues, but they are both quickly over with...I'm 6 months and everything great....looking forward to having my left hip done in near future.

Its like anything, when things go our way we tend to move on quickly but if our recovery is slow or complicated we may need extra support or advice, which this site is incredible for.

Whatever you decide you will have many people here looking out for you...All the best

I had my op on 5th December.  I am 71.  I had no complications whatsoever.  Just follow hospital's advice and do the exercises prescribed. I had no pain at all after the op except some tenderness and a swollen leg which has practically gone now.  I am walking fine now with no crutches and no limp.  You will be fine and its such a relief to be able to walk properly without pain.  Take it easy at first and take care.  Good luck.

Catrin if you're in pain and it is effecting your quality of life I strongly recommend having a THR.  Don't allow the set backs or complications that some people have shy you away from a pain free life.  Remember this web site is the small percent that had some issues.  The hundreds of thousands who never had any issues aren't here telling us their story.  I had my surgery in August 2014.  The first month I had some issues.  I was very weak, felt sick, flu like symptoms and I had no energy.  But as I went through physical therapy and started walking outside I quickly regained my energy and feel great now.  As I write you today this is my sixth month.  My only limitation is flexibility.  To be honest it's probably my fault.  I hate stretching and I've put on a few pounds since the surgery.  The good thing is I walk 1/2 mile everyday and I'll lose the weight.  Good luck and I hope this helps.

    Hi

I too am having op in two weeks and was scared about everything. This site and all replies have made me feel a lot more confident about the surgery. I have been amazed at the kindness of strangers and cannot thank everyone on this site enough.

I'm sure all will be ok.Nothing can be as bad as the pain I am in right now, Everyone seems to be positive and in 3 months time we too will be able to be glad to feel normal again and do the activities we love best.

Hi Glyn. Really try not to worry. I am a week post op and feel great. I was so so anxious and scared and everyone said it will be the best thing to do and were right. My horrendous pain has gone. I can walk better (with stick) than have for ages.  Good luck for your op. it will be fine. Sending love

Glynn, I said the same thing when folks asked me if I was nervous "nothing can be as bad as I feel right now", was always my reply.  It was good to be at work as the kids took my mind off the pain, it was just getting down the hall to get the kids! And little legs seem to move SO fast! smile
