No sleep.

Tonight I just cannot sleep. I want so much to go on my side. 3.5 weeks post op. Heels sore. Slight pain in wound but nothing else. Changed to a different bed but no joy.. Ah well loads of naps during the day today..How many people would love to have nothing to do all day but eat walk sleep.

Once upon a time I would turn over for five minutes after alarm.

Not moaning. Just killing time. Might get up and have hot milk and toast. My comfort food. I know Renee is awake but hope all on this side of equator sound asleep.

    redface busted !!!!

I am so incredibly sorry Attractac .... stupid question, but what is keeping you awake? is your mattress comfortable ? sometimes a protein snack helps -

I am sure that you tried everything and running out of options ... so exhausting !!!

What would it take for attractac to get a good night sleep? I am thinking but nothing else comes to mind except to let it be ...

How about NOT going to bed at all? stop putting so much pressure on your self and stay out of bed at night ... you can't sleep anyway, so why torutre yourself?

DId I read that correctly that you are not sleeping on your side yet?  is that it?? then try it .. seriously ... put the pillow between your legs and gently roll on your unoperated side ... you can put something in front of you for support if your bed is big enough (mine is not, but that is a different story) - you might feel some pulling or a little discomfort -

Many of us here have been sleeping on our side from the beginning .. just having this choice makes ot so much less stressful ...

Not sure if I am helpng here, but my thought are with you !!

    warm hug

P.S. maybe this response is so boooooring that it puts you to sleep

Because I was told six weeks on back I am trying to stick to rules.I have two comfy double beds so might try a while on my side now. I know that fear of doing something wrong is my worst problem. I have been getting blocks of 3 hours but just not tonight. Of course this is my first night on my own but I have no fear. Have had hot milk toast with banana so trying again.

      Hi attracta

I try antihistamine - the ones that make you sleepy. They knock me out when all else fails

Yep two weeks post op and sleep is elusive for me too. I'm still getting the odd stabbing pain and pain in the groin but really not any more painful than preop arthritis. Sigh, I too was the kind of sleeper that never understood insomnia. What a lesson I'm getting. Had a long night last night, was on the computer this morning and just blacked out for an hour waking up cold and stiff. Put me out for the rest of the day. Lesson in patience for us I guess...

Hi Andy. Hope like me you are lucky enough to get sleeps during the day. I usually get blocks of two three hours just not last night. Mind you I lay in bed a few times yesterday with legs up trying to get knee swelling down. Didn't sleep but maybe body had enough rest.

Yep getting those naps in. I guess it's the old protestant work ethic of never napping through the day that stops me from doing it more! Also noticed (as many others have said) that my emotions roller coaster. After that unplanned nap this morning I felt unsafe for some reason. I'm with loving friends who would do anything for me but I felt I needed to be some where else.... So glad to have this forum to vent as we all seem to have the same journey.

Hey heard on the news that the mayor of a Spanish town as passed a law making 3 hour siesta compulsory as people were getting away from the old tradition of siesta. Maybe we should all be sent there to recuperate.

Try on side with pillow between legs, I also have a pillow alongside me as a bit of wedge to stop me rolling over too far, also get some sleeping aid , I occaisionally use Restavit (Doxylamine succinate) to knock me out

Yes going to try side now. I think it's all in the head. If I can even get an hour on side it would be a reward.

The slightest little niggles or discomfort can be enough to keep anyone awake.  Even when I gave up my daytime painkillers I still placed one on bedside table at night ready with water.  When I woke about 2 for the inevitable wee I would take the pill and then sleep till morning. I hadn't done that for a couple of weeks but with my sore knee I did it again last night and slept till 6.

Hello, I am 3 weeks in and the best advice I can give you is, like others, chill out. I used my early days insomnia to watch soppy films in the middle of the night. Sleeping on my back was my biggest moan - if you could have seen the piles of cushions and pillows I had amassed to keep me facing up. The only thing that helped a bit was arranging some behind my knees and raising my legs. I gave up at about a week and became a night person. I roll with what my body wants. If I sleep I sleep and if I don't well, I'm not going to be falling asleep at work!

1.5 weeks in I broke the rules and fell asleep on the sofa on my side (not wound side) and survived! The trick is to keep those hips 'ladylike' - keep your hips and legs in line. In bed I lie on my back, place a firmish pillow between my legs and then gently turn my whole body together onto my side = sleep all night.

I still wake up because I have this mad, raw pain mid thigh but I just think - wow, they cut the top of my femur off it's going to be painful.

Just listen to your body, my friend, we all heal at different rates. The advice is there to stop you taking up wrestling after the op - be careful and gentle and test things out as you go.

    Mmm, hot milk and toast......

I have pain around scar too but hey I used to call and cut my knees when I was young and those surface cuts were painful for days. I tried to watch the op as suggested and had to stop when they started cutting through the fat. I asked my consultant if he would take away a bit of the belly fat when he was at it but he said no fringe benefits. I'm back in bed after sorting out washing ( anyone else told not to hang put washing for 3 months-- also told no hoovering or floor washing for 3 months)and have let daughter know that phone switched off.
