No Symptoms, No Breakouts .

Hi,

I was wondering how you actually get tested around herpes type 2?

I had a blood test (although i have herpes type 1) and doctors said i had type 2.

Its been 2 years, and I've had no symptoms or breakouts during that time and not to this day.

I've only ever been with 4 guys (One of them slept with someone who has type 2, but shes medicated and had no breakouts or symptoms during sex)

What are my chances of actually having type 2?

Which test did they do, IgG or IgM? Do you know your index values? If not, ask the clinic for a copy of your lab results.

      Hi

I actually have no idea to be honest, i said i had been with someone who slept with someone who has type 2. Apprently the herpes virus is in my blood which is understandable since i have type 1

Also someone told me yyou can't catch type 2 unless its skin to skin contact with the infected area

I think if the Drs said you have something you probably have it.

But, if you are not comfortable with the diagnosis....than tell your Dr to explain it to you.

And if you are not ok with the explanation than obtain a 2nd opinion.

Well like i said to the doctor i do have type 1.

But haven't had any out breaks etc... i have had outbreaks on my mouth (but thats type 1) so of course i have the herpes virus. Because type 1, but i didn't think they could test you for type 2 unless you have symptoms or a outbreak.?

I would think they would have to be able to tell from the blood if you had type 2 beause they shouldn't TELL YOU that you DO...if they have not confirmed it.

Like I said...ask them more questions until you feel comfortable.  And if you don't feel comfortable after that discussion with them...get a 2nd opinion.

Ask them...just like you asked here.  How can you tell I have type 2 from a blood test if I don't have outbreaks?  You may get the answer you need.

Some doctors still order the wrong test (IgM, pcr on blood) and strictly interpret the results without regard for known issues, so it's not always that simple. Good policy to always ask for a copy of your lab results.

Yes, I do agree.  I didn't know that some tests could be false positive for this condition...I thought it should be simple.

They are two different viruses and you can test for both by swab when there are lesions or by IgG antibody blood test when there are none. It matters which test you had done and what your value is, hence why I asked. You should find out. A low positive could be false, but not the case if high. If the test was for IgM antibodies instead, then that test is useless and you need to repeat for IgG. I would get your lab results from the clinic if I were you.

You could very well have type 2. You can pass it even when you aren't having any symptoms of it. Many people have it and don't even know. All it takes is a little friction or skin to skin contact to get it. If your immune system is in tip top shape you usually won't get any symptoms of the virus. You can wear condoms every time that you have sex and still end up getting it. It is a very sneaky thing. It doesn't take long to show up on a blood test after you have came in contact with it.
