No symptoms yet, but ...

I tested positive about a year ago for HSV-2. A doctor put me on a short course (2-3 weeks) of Valtrex after the diagnosis. I have never noticed any symptoms or outbreaks. If I were to have unprotected sex with someone who also has HSV-2, is there a risk I could contract a new strain or otherwise be exposed in a new way and start to have outbreaks/symptoms?

Unlikely. Although different strains within hsv types apparently exist, they seem to be of little consequence, as they are never discussed or researched. However, I would confirm that you do in fact have hsv2 first. How were you diagnosed if you have never had outbreaks. What type of test was it? Swab, igg, igm?

Thanks for the reply. I was diagnosed after I had blood tests taking for the whole range of STIs. I'm not sure which type of blood test it was.

Unless it was igg and you tested high positive for hsv2, or just positive but in the absence of hsv1, you may not necessarily have it. False positives can be an issue, so it's necessary to know more about your test and results.

Thanks again. Sounds like I need to get tested again and make sure it's an igg test.
