Nocturnia (night time urination) and Coffee

I presented some observations about the positive effects of coffee has had on my bph in this older thread here:
In the same manner, and probably for the same reasons, I have noticed a positive effect on night time urination (Nocturia) as well.
What I find is that if I have a couple of cups of coffee in the late afternoon, that it stimulates more urination before bedtime than if I didn't. This in turn results in fewer trips to the bathroom at night, often no trips.
Whether or not it's the stimulation of the detrussor muscles, or just the diuretic effect of caffeine, or a combination, it seems to work. Of course, caffeine late in the day has to be weighed against any stimulation effect it may have on inhibiting sleep although personally not a problem for me if I have the coffee before 6PM.
We often read (or hear from our doctor) that coffee isn't good for bph, but I suggest that everyone not only listen to what their doctor and what the literature says, but to what their body says.
If coffee doesn't agree with you, another nocturia strategy might be to experiment with rx diurretics in the late afternoon to the same end. Again, the idea is to shift the bulk of urination from nighttime to daytime.

Hi Unclefester,
Not sure about the prostate "swell(ing) around the urethra" but, yes, I have read that caffeine is a prostate irritant. Doesn't mean however that it's true, or that it's true in all cases. Remember, BPH is a catch all diagnosis and therefore an oversimplification. I'm just sharing my experience with caffeine and BPH, including nocturia, and it's positive not negative. I suggest people in this case listen to their body and not what they read. It's a very simple experiment, just drink a couple of cups of coffee in the afternoon and see if it helps your symptons. A lot less of an invasive experiment then TURP.

My problem came to light about 2.5 more than ago. . I went to the ER and a CT scan revealed my bladder was the size of a water melon. I was retaining 2500 ml of urine. . I was still urinating as what I thought was normal tight up to 15 minutes before the CT scan. . They put an indwelling catheter in me for 4 weeks. Upon removing the catheter I could no longer urinate on my on at all. . I have been self catering 5x per day for the past seven weeks. . A couple of times I was a to get 1 ml out other then that nothing. . The other problem I have is too high of a urine output at night. . I can have anywhere from 450 to 900ml in 3 hours after going to sleep. And that is after cathing prior to bed. . I tried everything early dinner as possible, usually 5 to 7pm depending on work. . Limiting Fluid intake during the day and only a few sips of water after dinner, etc. And nothing much works. . However, something weird lately, I drank a bunch of coffe through the day and even with dinner a couple times and my urine output reduces not only at night but even during the day. All my self caths seem to stay between 300 and 500 ml. I am assuming it is either the coffee or the sugar. . So strange, if I hardly drink much I have alot of urine output and if I drink coffee Carefree throughout the day my output reduces to almost normal. . So that is how I found your post as I was googling nocturia and coffee, so you are definitely came to the same realization as me, that coffee seems to reduce the urine output.
I have to go for my first urodynamic test in another week. . Of course the are already talking turp although my prostate by finger test was said to be around 30 grams or whatever that measurement is. . I am so frustrated that although I must have been retaining, I was able to urinate on my own but since they had the indwelling for those 4 weeks, I am unable to urinate on my own. . I am 54 years old with 2 young children, and this happening is so scary. . Will I ever be able to urinate again on my own at all? . Any natural vitamins or supplements to try that might help the bladder to start working again? I could not take the Flomax or rapaflo as my blood pressure was dangerously high then low as well as other side effects. . I finally got my insurance to approve speedicaths. . As the samples I tried seemed to work well. . I have been. Using magics but had some irritation and bleeding a few times plus the lubricant does not always work right and the caths are hard to pull out. . I was hoping you might have some advice or recommendations for me as you seem to have a lot of experience with this issue and are very knowledgeable. . Thank you!
