Noisy walking

Hi,

I'm asking for your advice again as although I've had my pre-assessment so hopefully not much longer to wait, I'm hearing and feeling the most horrible bone clicking every time I try and walk now. Is it a good idea to keep walking? And my pain intensity yesterday prevented me from walking at all. Today it's a bit better but still very bad pain. Is it still sensible to try and walk even though you're in such bad pain? Yesterday frightened me to be honest as I was unable - for the first time ever - to put one foot in front of the other, even gripping onto my rollator, just to go across my living room to get to the kitchen. I don't know what is advisable and what is plain daft. Surely to just sit hour after hour can't be good for you?

    Dear Sarah

I would do two things. First limit your walking to the minimum possible and second contact your doctor to get your surgery arranged as soon as possible.Try to do whatever exercises you can without walking to keep your body as active as possible.

    Good luck, Richard

    Hi Sarah,

My hip clicked and clunked for a few months before my op.  People standing next to me could even hear it. Sometimes it was intensely painful and at other times it was more of a sensation but either way it's an indication that your hip is completely worm out and you need a new one.  I continued to walk gently through the pain until my operation because it's important to keep your muscles as strong as possible.  Strong muscles make for a better recovery.  You shouldn't have to wait too long after your pre-op assessment but I would see your doctor to make sure he knows you need to get this done asap.

Hello Sarah....i,m now 4week post op .....i too was like you and was told by my surgeon the damage is already done and to keep moving as advised in other replays to keep my muscles moving as much as I could pre op. Touch wood I,m doing really well , it's quite amazing how that awful stage your at now will soon be over. Hang on in there and I wish you all the very best x x

Hi Sarah, I too I had horrible grinding and clunking coming from the hip when I was moving, and it was very noticeable when I was dealing with patients. I had no choice other than to carry on being active, but tried to minimise things as much as I could ( plus masses of painkillers!)The pain was constant anyhow, so difficult to tell if it worsened when the noises were obvious, but towards the end I was worried I was actually making things worse by carrying on.   I rested completely on my days off however, and did go on sick leave in the final week. I didn't get to ask whether I had made things worse, but it may be something to ask at my follow up in a few weeks. I think there is limited value in doing things because you think you should, but yes you should try and do something to keep the blood pumping and your muscles working. Could you try walking in the pool? Once you wake up from your procedure you will know straight away things are better, you will be a new woman!!

Hi Sarah I had my preassessment in June and I am still waiting on a date for my operation, I will now need another preassessment which is a pain, my hip clicks all the time and the pain is unbearable but nobody can tell you if you are making it worse by walking or should you be resting it.  What area are you in and is your surgeons list running to plan?

      Dear Jacq

It's horrible to have that uncertainty hanging over one. I've had it with the ankle for much of this year and gave up my long walks to preserve it. Took up swimming and was doing over half a mile every other day but then the hip failed!

I would be inclined to reduce the wear on the hip as much as possible and replace the exercise with upper body exercises and foot exercises.

I hope you have good news soon.

All the very best to you.

      Cheers, Richard

I'm gobsmacked Jacq. How the hell can this be? I'm so sorry you've had your hopes dashed like this. I'm in Clacton on Sea - Essex - I've had my pre-assessment and like you were, I'm just waiting now for a quick op date. My pain is unbearable too. For the first time today I've had to say no to a social event I go to every week. I love going there. Today I cant put one foot in front of the other so I haven't gone.

Someone told me today that her friend - who's only taking PARACETAMOL(?) - is having her pre-op at the same hospital as me, with the same surgeon as me. I mean to say, PARACETAMOL?............It didn't exactly help my mood when she told me that.

I don't know why some people get their op quite quickly when they only need a mild painkiller and others, like us, are left waiting a long time and crying in pain. Totally not on.. If I get put off like you I'd rather be dead. A bit dramatic but I can't get on top of agony.

Hi Sarah you are not being dramatic because some days that is exactly how I feel, I haven't been able to lie down in bed since August of last year I sit up in the bed sleeping or I should say trying to sleep, I now have bed sores which are horrendous. For the past 4 Saturdays I have had friends having birthday parties and I've not been to any of them as I can't sit in a chair for any length of time.  I am going to phone on Monday and see if they can give me any idea when I will be done although I don't hold out much up as the booking coordinator is really not helpful and the last time I phoned she told me to wait and I would get a phone call or letter informing me of a date.  People keep saying to me they can't leave you like that you must be able to speak to someone, but I have tried and all I keep getting told is because my hip is so complex only my surgeon can do it and I can't go on anyone else's list.  I am at my wits end and it is really wearing me down I have always been a glass half full kind of girl but I swear that glass is getting emptier x lol I hope you get your date soon Good Luck

      Dear Jacq

I had a look at your profile to see where you live but nothing shown. The Royal South Hants hospital in Southampton are promoting their NHS services as having low waiting times. It's where I had my hip done a few months ago. Might be worth ringing them.

I've just checked their web site and they are saying 4 weeks for first appointment and surgery 7 weeks following referral. Times approx of course. If this does not help you perhaps it may help someone else. Phone number is 0333 200 1820.

      Good luck

Hi Richard thanks for that but I'm in Lanarkshire in Scotland about 11 miles outside Glasgow.  It seems to be my surgeon with the long list, I am so confused because I was told I can't go onto anyone else list and when I spoke to my consultant on Tuesday he quite cheekily said if you don't want to wait for me go to someone else.

      Dear Jacq

You can always give the a ring to check the situation.   They surely must be asked this quite a bit since they have put themselves out to take on patients without any rider to say just withing the Southampton catchment area.  Problem might be getting home afterwards.   Please let us know what the answer is.

      Cheers, Richard
