Non union 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture

hi,

I have fractured the base 5th metatarsal 3 times the last time being May 2014, 6 weeks nwb in a cast that had been set wrong with my foot turned in. It is non union and causing a lot of pain. I am seeing a specialist who wants to inject steriod to ease the pain but this isnt a solution. I am a 21 year old woman i dont wish to rely on a steroid long term.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's a non union and he is not opting for you to get surgery? ! I definitely wouldn't want to get injections periodically either! Get the surgery! You tried the natural way now go under the knife and get that screw! Surgery lowers you chance of re-facture significantly, gives you the absolute highest chance of healing properly AND the healing process is MUCH faster. Think about it.

thank you for your help. the only thing he said was there are two options for surgery. one being the screw which he said i cant have because the fragment is too small to work with. so the other surgery is bigger but i cant remember what this was!

I think they can also put a wire in there too. I'm curious as to the other procedures I'll research and get back to you. ASAP

All I can find is that the doctor can recommend a bone graft, where they take bone from somewhere else and attach it there and it grows faster. Either way, do what you gotta do. I don't want you missing more time unnecessarily. Feel better!
