Normal HIDA, but....

Had hidascan on Monday. Said 38% EF with mild enterogastric reflux. My pcp referred me to a surgeon because she has read that the reflux could be causing the URQ pain I have been having off and on for three years. The last couple months have been hard. Just never feel good. Not really nauseous, just blah. Have had three hidas in all. First was 14% (two weeks after celiac diagnosis), second was 94% (15 months after first), then 38% this week. All ultrasounds, ct scans, MRCP, have been negative for anything. Has anyone had anything similar to what I am going thru? Did you have surgery to remove gallbladder? Did it help? Did it make reflux worse?  Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm still trying to find out if my gallbladder is the problem.

I wonder why your 3 HIDA scan % are so wildly different. That's really strange.

Are you in the UK ? I think maybe not as you've managed to get 3 HIDA's.

    Hi there

I suffered with dull achey pain in the right side of my abdomen, mainly upper, chronic burning reflux in my throat, unbearable cramping all over, bloating, change in bowel habits and other horrible symptoms for 3 years. I went through gastroscopys, colonoscopys, ultrasounds, MRCP scans, two HIDA scans, blood work etc over the years. I was constantly told it was IBS, abdominal migraine, hypersensivity and all the usual rubbish. Was told it was 100% not my gallbladder. On Tuesday I got a third opinion from a specialist who did an endoscopic ultrasound, something I hadn’t had before and... a distended gallbladder and stones/sludge has been found. You can imagine how I felt! I’m being referred to a surgeon to discuss removal, but because of my long history of reflux, I too am worried it will make it worse. I currently have something called a bravo ph capsule attached to my throat (it falls off after a few days) and it does readings through a little reader I keep with me. That should determine whether it’s acid or bile coming up, as that’s another question to address before considering surgery. Make sure that the surgeon discusses all of this with you, and if the answers seem a bit weak/unclear, then see someone else - that’s what I’ve learnt! Never stop pushing for what you need.

      Hi Stephie,

Nothing showed up on any of your scans? This scares me as I too have had every test done in the book and my HIDA scan came back low at 31% but no stones. I am having it removed tomorrow due to extreme nausea, flank pain, back and shoulder pain. I feel as if there is something stuck somewhere but not even the ultrasound or CT scan shows any blockage. I have had upper lower GI done too and handfuls of xrays. All my blood work shows normal except vitamin D. I too have reflux and it is miserable. I have started taking DGL licorice tabs to try and go the natural route to treat GERD. You have to take them consistently for 3 months but they kind of helped me so far. I agree never stop trying to get answers.  Good luck with everything.
