Norovirus and Prednisolone

Well I've just had one of the most unenjoyable few days of my life with a bout of the Norovirus. It hit me like a ton of bricks, OK one minute and absolutely not OK the next! I won't go into details (all dignity went out of the window) only to say that after I'd collapsed for the third time my partner called the Doctor :doctor: . She came out within half an hour (bless her) and found that my blood pressure had dropped dramatically (the reason for passing out) and as I just could not stop being sick she gave me a jab in the bum (am I allowed to say that here  ). She gave me the glad tidings that it would possibly make the PMR flare up as I was very poorly. No point worrying about that, just wondering whether I should up the prednisolone for a few days or leave it be and see how it goes. Anyone had a similar experience? My reduction has been going so well I don't really want to tamper with it, however, lots going on just now with Christmas round the corner and thinking maybe just stop reducing for the time being rather than up the dose. Any ideas. Of course there is always a silver lining and this one is? The loss of 8lb in weight - almost overnight! I feel like a teddy bear that's had its stuffing taken out!

Love to all,

A thinner Lizzie Ellen :o

Well the weight loss sounds great but Im sure Christmas will sort that out !!

    Hope you feel better soon

Hello Lizzie Ellen and I do sympathise having had the Norovirus a few years ago (pre PMR/GCA and steroids!). If it's any comfort I was over it in 48 hours and just felt a little bit weak for another couple of days but then, of course, you have PMR!!!

They say misery likes company.........well, I've been battling some nasty virus since last Wednesday. It started with a weird feeling of inflammation and pain across the very top of my stomach with nausea and followed by a sore throat and blocked nostrils. I tried to fight it with Paracetamol but at 5.30am yesterday, I felt my throat closing up and then noticed all my neck was swollen - far worse than any swelling from the initial steroids! Hubbie took me off to the recently opened Hospital Health Centre and a Dr prescribed antibiotics, adding that my immune system was unable to fight the infection due to the steroids! Christmas lunch out with former workmates tomorrow cancelled! Like you, I am trying to stick with my current 1mg dose of steroid and cross all fingers and toes and now these are crossed for you, too.

Lots of love and best wishes,

    MrsO

How horrid for you Lizzie Ellen

My husband went to some cycling club Christmas lunch yesterday and by the evening was bringing his heart up. But got better through the night. OK today just a bit washed out. So I'm wondering was it food poisoning (he had mackerel pate and turkey amongst other things) in which case I guess I'm in the clear, or was it a brief norovirus ?

So I wonder too how one copes. I haven't really had much in my 2 years with PMR, one cold I think.

Cold weather certainly hits me tho' sad sad And I'm not sure my brain functions quite as it should!! I thought I was happily very stable on 7.5 pred. starting to go down to 7.0 when I discovered some 5 mg had got in the 2.5 mg box by accident SO I probably was taking 10 instead of 7.5 for a few days!! I know they're a different colour but I suppose I just got careless and just took them quickly out of the box. Stupid, stupid!!!

So I hope nobody else makes that silly mistake. But advice on how you manage to take pills when you're not keeping anything down, and upping the dose would be really helpful. But I do hope we manage to avoid the virus - go into hibernation and avoid it?

Keep warm everybody, I often think what lovely warm HEARTS everyone on this site has smile smile Pam

Hope you are feeling better now I am very nervouse of people and all their germs I am always spraying my nose with \"First Defence \" I went into Southampton today and so many people were coughing and spluttering everywhere !!

Its not just you and the tablets Green Granny I took 5s ( non coated ) instead of 1s a little while back just the once 20mg instead of 4mg !! and I was in a panic but luckily no ill effects

Not looking forward to this horrible cold weather thats due back with us It says minus 16 for Fri night !!! We dont have temperatures in the sunny south like that ! so hoping its a mistake

    Keep warm everyone

Hi girls - oh, you poor things! I think feeling sick is absolutely the worst sort of being ill. If you have any of the low steroid sort of symptoms - up the pred for one or two days if you like. I think you should be able to just drop back to where you were after. And one or two wrong doses won't hurt - and better too high than too low - at least you'd feel good for a day or two!

However - did anyone consider hamthrax???? I gather the piggly flu is back in the UK. Just a thought - though only MrsO sounds like a possible candidate. Men - I am very picky about where I eat fish and fishy things much as I love it. Had a slightly dodgy one the night before we left for Korea in an Italian restaurant near Munich airport. One I wouldn't recommend to ANYONE.

BTW - I have my car back. Complete with a new front right headlight - which we are almost 100% sure is more suited to a German LHD vehicle. Mmmm - wonder what the MOT would have to say about that! Can't wait to hear what the company responsible has to say... On the plus side - it does work very well!

I have decided to run for parliament - and my platform? To move Christmas :cracker: to July and winter to Finland :snowball: That way it would be summer all year and PMR sufferers would feel better the whole year. 'Simples' Hope you'll all vote for me! :ok:

Now that's not fair - I need winter in Italy too. Up top this morning it was -20C, it's now warmed up to -18C

BUT - yesterday in Garmisch I had 2 cups of coffee, unusually. And I had taken my steroids (usual double dose) in the morning. I slept well and this morning felt very well. Can't quite put my finger on it but different?? Although it is so cold, it is now much drier than it has been for weeks. Remember the coffee discussion months ago - is it the coffee or the different weather???? Questions...

Or hang on - was the coffee discussion on here or on the US arthritisinsight forum? Some of you out there will know! If it wasn't here we could start it off!

Thought it was in retrospect - I looked last night but couldn't find it. Is it worth a thread??

    Hi Eileen & all,

We did have a thread on here about coffee and its affect...it was started on September 21st by Jill in Oz and is under the heading

    \"Coffee and PMR...friend or foe\"

I had to go back and check as I knew I had not read anything on the other site that Eileen mentioned.

Had unexpected visitors from 2.30pm until 9.30pm yesterday so am totally exhausted today  Lovely as it was to see them, all i wanted was to climb into my bed and sleep....this PMR is making me very anti-social

    best wishes to all, Pauline

Hi Pauline - hope you have recovered now! 7 hours of unexpected guests is tough - at least when you know someone is coming you can take it easier in the run-up. Did it include \"junior members of the expedition\" as we used to say on our skiing holidays? It's the noise I find such a drain - especially after our daughters left home (or, to be more accurate, we moved to England, leaving them behind! ) and we had the house to ourselves. One then came back to us to do A-levels in Durham and it was such a shock! She then kept going and coming back, lulling us into a false sense of security each time. No chance of a repeat now she has a proper job somewhere I would never live permanently - don't get me wrong, Whitby is very nice but it is built on hills, has rotten shops for real living and is a long way from a decent hospital - especially in the winter when the roads get blocked with snow - and, let's be realistic, that's something that should be borne in mind as you get older!

I knew it was Jill in Oz who had started that thread just wasn't sure when and where - but I must say, yesterday did make we wonder if there was something about the idea.

It's bitter here - a wind to go with the minus temps! Saturday we head south, right down to the heel of the boot for Christmas and New Year, Italian style! Next week is supposed to be 15-16C and some sun down there - lots more snow here. I imagine I may speak rather better Italian by the time we come back - I just hope I can cope with all the sight-seeing we have been promised and that there are not too many museums.

    cheers all,

    EileenH
