Nostrils constantly blocked by visible lump

Posted , 3 users are following.

This has been going on for around a year and a half now. Basically all the time one of either nostril is blocked by a visible lump furhter up my nose, however the lumps disappear/decrease in size and can change between each nostril, which rules out polyps (I think). It is very uncomfortable to live with and if I ever get a cold or my hayfever flares up I have trouble sleeping. I have done a bit of research and I believe it is Rhinitis but I cannot be sure. I went to the doctors a few months back however at the time the lumps had dissapeared and there was no blockage, so I was told there was nothing wrong with me, however a few days later they reappeared and the discomfort continued. I plan on going to the doctors again soon however I am concerned that if the swelling decreases when I visit I will be told again that there is nothing wrong. Any ideas about what to do?

It could be allergy, but have you got a CT scan done? An allergy skin prick test?

That would be the first step to figure out what's going on. It doesn't mean though that it will confirm anything.

I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you to try steroid sprays.

Meantime you could try nasal saline sprays or wash, sometimes it helps.

You can also get antihistamine tablets.

Hi if you try nasal sprays such as Beconase and similar over the counter sprays, you can only use them for a couple of weeks, then they make the problem worse. I use a saline spray each or twice a day made by Neil Med. You fill the supplied bottle with water and microwave it, add a sachet of sea salt and bicarbonate of sode, then gently squeeze it up one nostril (while leaning over a sink) and the liquid comes down the other nostril. Repeat with other nostril. It flushes out any debris and helps unblock either nostril. I am waiting for an ENT appointment, as doctor saw something up the clearer nostril but not the blocked one, which doesn't quite add up in my mind. However, I would try to get your doctor to refer you to an ENT doctor. You don't say where you live, but Neil Med is not available on the NHS in the UK but my GP advised me to give it a try, then when I said it wasn't working so well, I got an ENT appointment. Hope your doctor can sort it out for you. Regards, Val.
