Not healing correctly.

Had an excision of a sinus around 6 months ago and have been off work since then. The wound was pretty huge to begin with but healed pretty quickly and eventually became mostly scar tissue. There is however still a small (literally pin hole like) wound which seems to heal then regress and open up again and leak puss. After being at home so long im starting to worry why this small hole isn't healing correctly, i mean i get salt baths and sit for 30 minutes every day naked to let some air get to the area. There still seems to be a tiny hard spot below the area, im hoping this isnt the remainder or tract of the sinus they removed, i mean surely they couldn't have gone to the trouble of operating and then not removed the whole thing? Could they?

I had the same operation 3 months ago mine was pretty huge aswell..I'm already experiencing problems and had a post op assessment last week..the surgeon believes its just part of the healing process, but like you i know this is not the case and i also believe there are tracts that still exist within the wound...I have mentioned this to the surgeon and he dismisses it as nonsense (they think they know everything but they know nothing)but in fairness he has said if i'm still experiencing problems to go see my GP and he in turn can fast track me back to hospital for additional surgery..The operation i will undertake is called a Rhomboid Flap where they excise the wound as before but instead of allowing the wound to heal from the inside out they remove healthy tissue from the buttock and basically fill the wound and stitch every thing up..This is a final solution to this problem but there is some disfigurement involved and it is not pretty to look at, there is a lot of scarring in the shape of the letter Z..This operation is sometimes called a Z plasty..You can google this and see for yourself the before and after surgery results..I have decided to go down this surgical route as i have had 2 operations now involving excision and none have worked..the Rhomboid flap is the only option left open to me and there are no guarantees with this but at least the odds are a lot better..apparently two in every hundred have relapses..

I wish i could give you better news but this is my experience not just with this affliction but the total disinterest shown by surgeons and NHS staff..All i can say is be assertive with your GP and surgeon and tell them you know your body better than anyone..

im 16 and i have had 2 unsuccessful operations to date, with an open cut being 7cm long with 0.5cm width,

the rhomboid flap become unsuccessful to me and split open due to puss finding the weakest spot to discharge out of my body therefore splitting open. i have been experiencing a pilonidol sinus for over 18 months now.[/i:acb36e8667][/b:acb36e8667]

My husband has had the surgery too and he also has like a pinhole which hasn't healed, this sometimes becomes infected and causes him a lot of pain. he is reluctant to go back to see a surgeon and copes with it by getting anti biotics from the GP when he has flare ups and just putting up with it.

I had my op just over 3 months ago - I also still have a very small hole which doesn't seem to heal. sad I have visitied doc's twice now to ask about the open wound - and the internal pressure I feel when I sit down for any period of time, he has referred me to nursing staff for dressing on wound again and thinks the pressure / discomfort I am feeling is scar tissue (I just somehow know this isn't the case!) :x He says if it continues with no sign of improvement soon he will refer me back to surgeon!! It sems this is never ending - and I feel like I do nothing but moan about this - but I am very fed up and worried now! :?

This sounds quite worrying as I too have just had my second op to remove a sinus and again for the second time I have a tiny hole that just doesn't seem to want to heal. i'm glad i'm not the only one, as I too have been fobbed off constantly by doctors & nurses. This is really getting me down now as it does interfere with normal activities in life and I have had enough with going round with a dressing constantly taped to my backside!

Well, I'm yet another victim of the flipping pilonidal. Kinda happier I'm not the only one experiencing these problems but it really is literally a pain in the bum! I had it (apparently) removed at the beginning of August...it's now the 12th Nov and i've not been right since. Constantantly going backwards and forwards to the doctor for varying types of antibiotics. I'm awaiting a reply from the surgeon but goodness knows how long that will take.

I started with this nearly 3 yrs ago but it would only occur occasionally so i never felt the need to go to the hospital..... UNTIL it got so big i couldn't sit, stand so the gp booked me in to hospital and had a bed within 3ish hrs. Unfortunately it was the weekend so i was pretty much nil by mouth for 2 dys waiting for the op. While in there they gave me morphene cos nothing else would kill the pain and it eventually burst (which all i can say is such a relief). The healing process seemed to go well and the district nurse came to pack it every day for about 3 wks. Since Aug i've been wearing a plaster cos it constantly leaks and becomes swollen. I'm just hoping the NHS surgeons will be able to get rid of this with possibly a 2nd op although I realise it may come back.

It unfortunately seems to be just one of those things that a rather large select few seem to get.. I'm 25 and a girl who isn't overly hairy although did have an accident when i was 11 and damaged my coccxy... so that may be the reason.

Good luck to all.. hope everyone gets the problem sorted eventually!!!![/b]
