not sure whats wrong

It started back in mid January, I started with cough and pain in chest. It went on for about 2 weeks before I went to doctors, doctor said I had chest infection and give me week course of antibiotics. I felt very tired and had a couple of days out of work to see if I could kick it in to touch. When I just about finished course and felt no better I when back to doctors and he give me a week of steroids. Took them, and while I was taken them I felt better, wasn't coughing as much and chest wasn't painful, but as soon as I stopped taking the tablets the cough comes back and cold symptons/headache. Went back to doctors and he sent me for chest x Ray and give me a second course of steroids. X Ray came back fine, also put a phlegm sample in for test also fine. Anyway after second course, cough is back feeling tired and a bit breathless. Went back again and given antibiotics and steroids again, doctor said I had pockets of congestion on my chest, sats were 96 but had been 99. Half way though and now have swollen glands in right side of neck, unlike the last twice the cough hasn't gone. Rang doctor and he asked me to go and get bloods done which I'm waiting for results.

Just a little background, I'm 38, non smoker but I am obese I work full time in care for elderly.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with me?

Mid January I suddenly got a pain in my chest. When I breathed in, it made me cough. A dry cough. Doc gave me antibiotics. I thought it was trachyitis as usual. The tabs did nothing so week 2 I go back and I'm given painkillers and a steroid inhaler - nothing. I kept going back and got sent for an X-ray on the 6th week of feeling ill. it came back clear so as far as much GP is concerned, I've got nothing wrong.

The symptoms have been - slight fever, dry cough, sore neck glands, pain and irritation from back of throat to chest. Feverish symptoms, headache.

It seems to pass if I stay indoors but as soon as I breathe cold air, my chest flares up again.

So now it's near 11 weeks. Only difference is no phlegm sample was taken and no mucus found. Despite earache I was given the all-clear..

However, I'm still not well despite. My GP now telling me it's all in my head!

Sounds like there is some sort of infection going around to which our doctors have no clue how to deal with. I was told it was a virus 2 weeks in, that it would pass but needed time. Usually when they say virus it means 'could be anything but we don't know'.

Your symptoms are very alike to mine. I can't breathe in without coughing still. A horrible dry cough.

I forgot to add. I'm 40. Obese for my height..

I too am suffering from breathlessness. Just going to the bathroom and back to sit down can trigger it. I had to walk to my doctor's, not even a few yards and couldn't catch my breath. I have been overweight for years but never have I suffered breathlessness til this problem. Yeh maybe sore back and feet but only last December I was walking for over 2 hours straight and there was no breathlessness which everyone is trying to point on my weight. It isn't as it started 3 weeks into this chest problem.

Thanks for your reply. My mam had something similar about the same time as me but she didn't go to doctors, she said she would try and fight it herself. When I got second lot of tablets she took a turn for worst and ended up in hospital with pneumonia. She was off work for 3weeks but is loads better now. She isn't over weight but is a ex smoker. Doctor did said to her that the cough could hang on for a bit.

I think like you there is some nasty virus around and doctors are not sure or not able to put there finger on it. Mind I must say the doctor has never mention my weight as a problem connecting to my chest. I am trying to aid my body and boost my immune system by resting when I can, and taken a good multi vitamin. As I said earlier I work full time in care for elderly and haven't passed it on to service users or my husband and kids. I'm worried my family will be sick of hearing me complaining.

Waiting for bloods to come back now, has doctor not offered to do bloods for you?

Bloods are back, no action needed, don't know where that leaves me?!

I never got blood tests. As far as my GP is concerned its 'case closed' and I've nothing wrong but I am not better. Ask to see specialists. No, insist on seeing them.

Have you been to get second opinion or sent for more tests? Surely the doctor has to offer something to help to get to the bottom of it.

No. The doctor insists I've nothing wrong. X-rays are clear, I've had antibiotics so for him there's nothing wrong. This is despite me having a slight fever for 10 weeks on and off along with symptoms which are painful and irritating. I woke up this morning. Haven't left the house in a week but deep breaths make me cough, I have that irritated feeling from the bottom of my throat right down to my chest and this dry cough. I even tried taking allergy tablets as I have cats and the room is quite dusty and of course there's cat hair but that did nothing.mpainkillers don't work either. I suffer from depression and this has really dragged me down. I'm seeing a cardiologist due to my breathlessness. I mean I'm obese but I never got breathless from steady walking and even bending down to pick something up has me panting for breath which is very worrying. It started during this chest problem. I'm exasperated.

Don't know if you have read post on infections, I have commented on this as its very simple story to ours.

Nearly a month on from last post. Still in same situation, went back to doctor again and he gave me stomach tablets and said it could be acid reflux?! Try them for a week and as I thought I'm no better, in fact I have new symptoms as well as the ones I had. I have a horseness to my voice, yesterday my voice was so horse I could make myself heard, still blowing my nose and thick green mucus is coming out. Still coughing, light headed/ dizzy at times and just generally feel run down. So guess it back to doctors again.

I was given acid reflux tablets as well. At first I thought they were working but it must've been a placebo effect. I went to see a cardiologist who thinks it might be asthma which shocked me as I'm neatly 41 and never thought I could get that at my age. I'm on 2 inhalers for a week to see if it helps. If not then more tests by the cardiologist. I also got blood tests done to test for allergies. I don't have any mucus or blocked nose. Just the chest irritation and a very dry cough.

What does a cardiologist specializes in? Is that to do with the heart? My grandparents both ended up with asthma in later years but they both smoked, I never have. I think I'm going to have to go back to doctors. The more I think about it my problems have been maybe going on longer than I think. About a year ago my son had glandular fever. At the same time I had tonsilitis, my son was ill for 2weeks then got back to school, I was ok in a couple of days but every couple of weeks my glands would swell up. This went on for a while before the doctor said I had probably had glandular fever too. But in September I was still experiencing problems including light handedness and palpitations. I was give a heart check and they said I had right branch bundle blockage. Went to see doctor at hospital who put a monitor on overnight and said that I was probably born with it and I wasn't to worry about it. I don't know if any of this is connected or I'm I just run down and picking up viruses.
