Not the right time to detox from tramadol.

I,m not sure if there will ever be a right time to get off this drug with the prospect of further surgical intervention . I still might try to cut down from the 16 to 20 tabs a day that i,m currently taking. I will discuss this my surgical consultant as it may be that surgery would not be viable due to the quantity of trams and other meds im taking. Lets see how it goes after the consult..jx

Coming off of Tramadol is extremely tough.  The withdrawals are horrible, and they last for weeks.  But it is possible to stop taking it for good.  I was dumb enough to do it twice.  The only way to come off of Tramadol is to slowly taper off a little at a time.  If you have withdrawals, coming off cold turkey feels nearly impossible.  One of the worst withdrawals is the extreme restlessness, making it nearly impossible to sleep for weeks.  Tramadol stays in your system for a long time.  You will need to taper off slowly until you are down to a half a pill a day.  Then you may need to take that 1/2 pill for over a week until you are albe to come off it 100% and not have bad withdrawal symtems.  Or you can see how long you can eventually go without taking a pill, and then only take a 1/2 pill when you feel the withdrawal systems coming back.  Again, tramadol stays in your system a long time.  This is not a quick process, but I promise, it's doable!

I went to a place called Turning Point where a specialist made me a reduction plan, obviously you need to want to get off this drug and need willpower..The mistake that I was making when I had tried in the past to get off was that I was reducing too quickly..The reduction was reduce by one tablet every 2 weeks.. I know long labourious but it worked. I had very mild withdrawal for 2 days after the reduction mainly an upset stomach. If you feel ok you can drop a max of 2 tramadol every 2 wks..When I eventually got down to 10 a day the reduction plan was drop half a tablet every 2 weeks..Crazy really when you think that such a small amount would do any good..the whole idea was to keep withdrawal symptoms at bay...I am currently taking 8 a day until tomorrow when I drop half a tablet...when I eventually reach 5 a day I am able to do a straight transfer to whichever pain patch they feel, and I feel happy with. I know the pain patches will be trial and error until we find one that suits.....If you are concerned about withdrawal symptoms there are drugs that they can give you to reduce these symptoms. Thankfully I did not need these.....I will stress one thing most important that I was,nt aware of.......say you get down to 14 for example dont ever increase it even by one. Just because you could take 20-30 and be fine, once the reduction begins there is no increasing. The specialist said thats when your high risk of OD so dont be complacent....I hope this helps jx
