Hi Trop,
I've got to admit, my initial experience was the opposite - as soon as the unit was activated (after my metallic stitches were removed) I initially got very good results. That prompted me to work with the doctor, then, to start lowering my pain medication. As we did that the unit did not work as well (pain levels were back up due to the lower medication level and the unit was no longer offsetting that pain). Since that time we have been experimenting with new settings and also bringing my pain meds further down. I would say during most of that time I have been uncomfortable, but due more to the experimentation to get off the pain meds than the unit not working. It's been a year and a half since permanent implantation and I STILL have not found the settings on the unit that will allow me to eliminate my pain meds. But we keep trying to find the right mix.
The key takeaway from this I would say to you is don't despair, you haven't even BEGUN to see whether your unit will help you or not. There are literally THOUSANDS of combinations of programs they can put into your unit to see if it will help your pain. They can vary the strength of the electrical charge, the degree to which it pulsates inside you, the various areas of the spine that get electrified, etc. If you are just on Program 2 of your initial post-surgery settings, you haven't even scratched the surface of what the unit can do for you.
It IS surprising, though, that the unit isn't helping at the beginning for you - they tend to put the same settings in your permanent unit that worked for you with your trial unit, so you should at least be getting the level of relief you believed you felt during the trial. There could be reasons for that though - you could still have extraordinary post-surgery pain that simply has to go away on its own, or the unit's settings may need to "wash in" for a period of a few days to a week. But even if it isn't helping after that, there are still settings that can be changed again and again. It will take you many months of experimentation to find the right settings, so be patient. And most importantly, be sure to tell the doctor (and more importantly the Nevro tech) EXACTLY where the pain is - they need that information to make the adjustments to the unit to try again. Good luck!
