Nothing can be done for me they say but I have asked for more tests.

I have problems with my lungs, one of them being a h/hernia protruding into my lung area. I have also got heart problems, leaky valve etc. Over the past few weeks I am unable to walk around the supermarket for example as I get so breathless and exhausted. Over the last few days I have an ache in my chest when I take deep breath (it is not a sharp pain). I have been told by my GP and my Cardiac Consultant that nothing can be done so I asked for more tests. I have been finished with these tests for over a week now. Does anyone know how long it takes normally for scans etc to be checked and the patient contacted with date to see Consultant. As I'm getting worse and have to sit about all day I really feel that I should contact the Consultants Office but I'm not sure if this is the correct thing to do. Has anyone been told that there is nothing can be done with both lung & heart problems together. I think it was because each thing would mean a major op. Would be glad to hear from people in the same situation.

I really feel for you, truly I do.

The constant round of GP's and consultants and scans and blood tests, and then the waiting, waiting, waiting for results is just awful .. it's such a frightening and lonely thing to have to go through, especially when you're not feeling well. And even more especially when no-one seems to tell you what the hell is going on! I know the NHS is stretched .. and everyones doing the best they can, but what sufferers of chronic illnesses need more than anything is just someone to talk to .. someone who can take the time to listen, and answer the millions of questions buzzing around one's head.

I'm afraid I can't answer your questions, but maybe someone here will be able to help.

Just out of interest .. I went to a group called 'Open Minds'. They help people COPE with chronic illness, and I found them pretty amazing. I even had a damn good cry without feeling I was wasting anyones time. They were so nice. I'm sure there's one in your area.

Bless you .. and chin up!

Thank you so much for your lovely message Jo. I thought no one was going to answer. I did eventually phone the Consultants Secretary and she said that he now has all the results. Someone is going to contact me either today or tomorrow. I just hope that it is not with an appointment in several weeks time although I doubt if he will tell me anything over the phone. The thing is I have already been told nothing can be done but I'm just praying that they have found something that they can fix which will allow me to get out and about for a little while.   Thanks again Jo.

Just received copy of letter sent from Consultant to my GP. I have a Diaphragmatic hiatus hernia which I think means that some of my stomach has gone into my lung area and part of one of my lungs has collapsed. I have an appointment with my Consultant in three weeks time where he will talk it over with me. He has already said that he wouldn't advise me to have the operation if this was the problem but I feel that I have no choice. Has anyone out there had an op like this........ to take the hernia out of the lung area. If so, would you advise me to have the operation?

Oh dear .. you really are in the wars, hey? And another 3 week wait too! You poor thing.

I've never heard of a Diaphragmatic hiatus hernia .. but I can imagine it must be extremely uncomfortable.

Why has your doctor advised against you having it repaired?

Hi Jo, well I will discuss it with him again on 17th, but I got the impression that he thought it was a very serious operation with little success.

At last.........this is the day when I see Consultant. Hopefully he will give me results of my many tests. I know that I have a Diaphragmatic Hernia which is something babies can be born with but unfortunately I am one of the 5% of adults who have it. I know he is going to ask me if I want to risk an operation (I have heart problems) so if there is anyone out there who has this problem and had the operation could they please reply. Thanks

Well after 3 months I'm soon (tomorrow) to get a date for my op. It is a very risky op particularly when my heart isn't 100%. I asked earlier if anyone has had this op to have stomach removed from chest area but no one replied so I would  like to ask again. I feel that my life at the momen is just sitting around as I can't walk far without getting breathless. also I can't eat very much either. Do I risk the op and perhaps not survive it or stay the way I am, an invalid? Please someone talk to me.
