Nothing is working

I had my prostatectomy on August 30th and the incontinence is basically not an issue. There is absolutely nothing down below however. I've been taking Cialis for 3 weeks 5 mg a day. There is nothing and believe me I have tried. Injections are on order along with a vacuum pump. I have tried 20 M G's in a day once and it didn't help. Is this going to be forever? My worst nightmare. Is there anyone that started out like this that has had success and getting their sexual function back?

Mark some men take longer to recover after a prostectomy. I'm sure it seems scarey and has been for ever but 60 days isn't long. A prostectomy is a very major urological surgery. Just give yourself time to recoup . Bless every day because you could have that surgery because of it you have a very good chance of being a survivor. Good luck try not to stress yourself

    Mark,

i do not have experience with that. I am really sorry and hopefully things down there will start moving in right direction soon.

I am scheduled for prostatectomy on November 2nd in less than 30 hours.

i am also worried about that because soon I will be on my road of recovery and be faced with incontinece and impotence.

i do not expect this recovery to be fast and easy but I will do my part to overcome it.

I heard from many posters that patience is the name of the game.

    God bless,

    MK

I am now 9 months post a Robot-assisted Prostatectomy. I have had no incontinence issues. I have had two undetectable PSA results since then, and am not on any medication. I am 70 yo, and count myself fortunate after a Gleason 9 PCa that did not get out of the capsule.

I have experienced some minor spontaneous erections, and feel that better sexual functions lie ahead. I think it depends on how much of the nerve bundle (on one side in my case) was spared by the surgeon. Time is the other factor. A third one is how much a willing partner contributes.

I hope my post gives a little assurance.

Mark I had my prostatectomy on February 26 so I am 8 months out. This is a long process but you need to do everything you mention. Cialis Pump and injections.  I started injections back in July and I have just got the right mix that gives me a great rejection. So, at 3 times a week at the age of 57 I can go as long as a porn star. So, work with the doctors to get that mix right. It was very frustrating to me at first but now that I can just injected myself and have sex. I am good with it. I also think that one thing that is not preached is masturbation. I would try to as much as possible. One last thing get them to check your testosterone level. You may need to boost that but your doctors may not want to do that for a year out. My doctor got me on it after 3 months.

Just read an article on the prostatenet site talking about this very issue, and saying:

18 months after their radical prostatectomy, nearly 60 percent of men reported an inability to get an erection. That percentage dropped to 41.9 percent after 24 months. For men who undergo a nerve-sparing technique, recovery from erectile dysfunction may occur within 12 months of surgery. Recovery of erectile function after a non-nerve-sparing procedure is less likely. One study, for example, found that one year after prostatectomy, 66 percent of men experienced erectile dysfunction after having a nerve-sparing procedure versus 75 percent who did not have nerve-sparing surgery.

The good news is that more men may regain erectile function if they participate in a penile rehabilitation program within a few months of prostatectomy. The success of such a program will depend in great part on your pre-prostatectomy erectile function and the type of prostatectomy you have. If you are considering prostatectomy, you should discuss this program and the potential for erectile difficulties with your physicians even before undergoing prostate cancer surgery.

So, asTybeeman said, get working on it asap.

With nerve sparing surgery, erectile function should return, but the reading I've done indicate that it can take up to 2 years.  In the mean time you need to preserve the erectile tissues by providing blood flow, hence the low dosage Cialis.

Mark, sorry to hear that things aren't going your way... I really think the outcome depends on the extent of the surgery you have as not all have the same amount of removal...

I had a radical prostectomy back in 2012 at age 51 and have had total impotence and partial incontinence ever since...

?As geoff90305 mentioned, your worst nightmare is to be told 'sorry mate, your PCa has spread'... I'm now some 4 years down the track after having been told that...

?It certainly takes some time getting one's head around the non-existance of all sexual function...in fact I don't think I will ever adjust 100%...

Prepare for the worst case scenario and anything less is an absolute bonus...
