Now I know

Any feedback would be great. I am now having my first outbreak I think. Small reareas around my torso where my leg meets my genital area. Pretty painful. Only have two areas and I was diagnosed 2 months ago. This truly is very uncomfortable. I am on Valtrex but it's seems to continue to pop up. Started about a week ago. How long should I expect this to last. It's affecting how I move around especially walking. Does Valtrex work for everyone or should I ask for something else. Also, I did get a spot on my elbow and on top of my hand. Is it possible to get them there and if so do I need to lock myself in the room to keep from spreading this. Theses areas started like something was sticking me and since they have become hot and dull constant pain. Any input???

You were diagnosed two months ago, but only having a first outbreak now? What made you decide to get tested and how were you diagnosed? Which HSV type? Just curious.

While autoinoculation is possible up to 4 months or so from infection, it seems unlikely that you spread it to two other areas, unless you touched a lesion then rubbed elsewhere without washing your hands. Otherwise genital herpes doesn't just appear elsewhere.

If this is really a first outbreak, the meds can help somewhat, but not entirely, and only if started very early on. It's not uncommon for new lesions to still appear. From first symptoms till the skin is fully healed, it can take 2-4 weeks for a first outbreak. Recurrences are milder and last 2 weeks or less.

Hey Felis this is the person you helped a whole lot a few weeks back. I'm pretty sure this is the first outbreak. Hsv2 is my diagnosis. This condition I am going through now truly is different than anything I have ever felt and it's happening all in the same area. Just two areas now but it feels like more may be on the way. I must say it is a little uncomfortable and painful but not something to just put me down. I've been taking Valtrex for about three weeks and these are just now popping up. I was just curious how long this takes and does it ever go away for a while completely. I know there is no cure but is there time of normality between outbreaks. I sure hope so.

Crossed messages, lol. Did your partner ever get tested by IgG, by the way? If so, what was her result? Yes, there are definitely periods when you feel normal again. The virus fortunately goes dormant more often than not, and is only reactivated occasionally. Type 2 recurs on average 5-6 times per year, and this usually becomes less over time.

Oh, I remember you! Type 2, right? I think this is a recurrence. You were ill when you were first diagnosed, but just didn't have all of the symptoms, like lesions. I'm guessing that was your first "outbreak". If this is a recurrence, it shouldn't last as long.

Yep that's me. Thank you again. I truly hope it doesn't last that long. It does suck.

I think I may have triggered a very mild recurrence about a week ago, but it was barely noticeable. Then again, I had almost the full set of symptoms the first time. Maybe you're somehow having a "first" outbreak the second time?? That seems very odd, but HSV is a funny one!

Hmmmm. Maybe so. This is definitely not a textbook thing. It has a mind of its own. How long have you been diagnosed?

Surprisingly, only for about as long as you! Over 2 months now. I just Google and read a lot. All the time, lol. Hence why I know all of the stats and info on GH. I'm actually putting together a website (for real!), haha.

Well I must say you are truly doing a great thing for a lot of people. I will definitely stay in touch with you. All of your research has helped me tremendously. I do have one question: when you have a breakout how does it feel?

      Thanks, John! smile

Outbreaks vary considerably from person to person. Some have it so mild they don't even notice. Some (typically women and first outbreaks only) get it so bad they need hospitalization due to the pain and difficulties urinating.

Most fall somewhere in the middle, usually some/many lesions (pain varies a lot between individuals), swollen lymph nodes, maybe flu-like symptoms, maybe burning urination, etc. Last three are more typical of first outbreaks.

My first outbreak was relatively mild/moderate. More stressful than anything else! Main symptom was burning urination, a handful of lesions that were only sore to touch, and one swollen lymph node.

I must have already had the first one. I had a fever of 102 with painful urination and swollen lymph nodes but no lesions. This time I have a couple very small areas but they are pretty painful. Nothing I can't handle though. I look forward to these outbreaks possibly getting far and few between. Let me know when you get up your website. I would love to follow it. Thanks again.

P.S. I felt fine otherwise. No fever, aches or anything like that.

Yep, that was your first outbreak and this is a recurrence, like I figured. Just weird how you didn't get any obvious lesions the first time. You did have lesions, however, just not the usual visible ones that are typical of a first outbreak. Fyi, burning urination is a sign you have lesions inside your urethra.

Do you happen to have any pointers of self medication. Such as ointments that may help with the pain or speed up the process. I'm very involved in holistic healing. My family is in the nutrition and chiropractic work. Any ideas or pointers.
