numb foot / disc prolapse

my second disc prolapse happened December last year. The pain this time was more severe leaving me unable to walk for a month. Now thankfully the pain is much less. But what is concerning me is this numbess in my foot. It feels like it is frozen and my toes are stuck together! I walk with a limp most of the time. Heels are a no no! At the
moment it is driving me nuts with the constant stinging and tingling like
really bad pins and needles. One consultant told me it would take up to
18 months to go away and another told me it might not go properly!!
Has anyone out there had this and had a full recovery? I didn't have this with my first disc prolapse!! I want to walk tall again!!

I know how you're feeling, I've got the same numb feeling. I've had 2 back operations now my 1st was in Jan 07 a Discetomy. I was left with a Numb left leg and foot. I had a PLIF (Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) done Jan 08. My numbness hasn't altered in all that time. I've just got used to it now, my left foot and leg are always cold and I can't wear high heels too, if I do I keep going over on my foot.
I've now been told that I probably won't get the feeling back in my leg and foot now as it's been 2 years now.
I feel really unsteady sometimes especially when I go up and down stairs. It's a very strange feeling but like I say I've got used to it now.
Hope this helps you.

I too have problems with my toes being claewd, caused from nerve compression/damage. Yesterday I went to see an Orthopaedic Consultant at my local hospital, because for me the situtaion is permanent and likely to get worse. An x-ray showed the bones in toe two are over those of toe three and pushing all the others along as well. So I am now being sent along to get something made up to go in my shoe and also something to strap the toes together. The Consultant did not advise getting such devices from a shop (I didn't even know they were on sale) as it is best to get them make specially by the NHS.
I too have had two surgeries and now have two new herniations, but they are not going to operate.....yet!!! However although all this started with a compressed disc, the residual problems with my foot have been made worse by my clawed toes. Although the problem is all nerve related now as a knock on effect, because the toes can't sit straight and the end two can't move at all, there is a danger of them getting very much worse. If this next step doesn't work I have been told the next step is to have them broken and fused.
In short it is a serious problem which is unlikely to improve. I would suggest that you ask your GP to refer you to an Orthopeadic Consultant specialising in lower limbs.
Best wishes
