I had a total hip replacement done on my right hip 2 weeks ago, and I do know why but my left heel feels numb, has anybody else had this problem. Thank you in advance.

I think this is quite common...you'll find it on other threads....I had it too with sleeping on my back I think...I tried a combination of cushions and rolled up towels until I got comfy...only lasted a few weeks...such bliss once you can sleep on your side....!!

Also try bending your knees so you're not resting on your heels...the knee bends and slides are one of the physio exercises you should do anyway....

So tru Chrissy... I did the same had so many pillows on the bed hardly left room for my partner.

i hated to sleep on my back with that stupid a shape pillow between my legs.. It felt like torture at the time. it's still makes me flinch thinkin about it. In the scheme of things it was only for a short time.. Really helps the bone nit to the prothesis and heal in alignment.

      Many blessings sent UR way

Hi Lynne when are you going home? It's then you may need some cushion/ pillow combinations to stay comfy in bed, get yourself a grabber too. I'm still using the small cushion between the knees,.its comfy more than necessary....and yes I'm running around..well not quite but I can get up and down stairs quickly with no pain and walk round the shops for ever!! So glad I went through it and you will be too! Got my 6 month review in a few weeks..doesn't time fly!

      Take care

Hi Lynn, I too have an electric bed and slept with my feet raised for some months after the THR, I also used a pillow to stop my leg from falling sideways while I was asleep. My advice, from my experience, would be to prop yourself up however you feel comfortable, that way you can get some sleep. I still sleep with a small cushion between my knees and I'm almost 1 1/2 years post op. Don't worry I'm sure as the months go by you will be feeling much better. I wish you well soon, keep up the exercises.

I found a thick comfortor folded into thirds was more comfortable between my legs than a thicker pillow. Keep experimenting, you will find something that will sorta kinda work. Just don't set your hopes up to find the perfect pillows/comfortors and it will all go away. It actually doesn't "go away" it just makes it kind of "less worse".

Ha...I agree...less worse rather than better...but much better eventually!!!

I have a numb front thigh...18-19 weeks post anterior left hip.  2 weeks is too early, wait at least 6 weeks or even more, things chage rapidly in recovery.

Congratulations Valerie u made it to the other side.

Now that UR in recovery exercises r very important to do in bed and continue them to build up repetitions which in turn builds strength in UR leg & supplies oxygen and blood flow thru UR leg to UR foot .. To avoid the numbing I put my leg on a pillow off the bed. Pressure can stop the blood supply and swelling in the foot.

Always keep a pillow between UR legs never cross the mid section of UR pelvis .u know the drill by now ...

Do u have a date to start Physical therapy.. They can help in healing and address any of UR concerns .. Pretty soon u will be released to drive. Most importantly now it is important to eat right take vitamins exercise and take recommended precautions in movement & aftercare.. I recommend drinking lots of protein shakes here in the US the brand is BOOST pre made in a handy container with all the good stuff...needed after surgery. My nurse said u need 2200 calories a day to heal properly after major surgery. I like to include my fav chocolate bar.

Thank you for your reply, I feel better for that, I have just started with the

physio therapy and I realise it is early day but not sure on how long it takes to get normal again. Looking on the bright side though I do like the comment about chocolate!

      Christine..

that is the one thing I always fear.. I have had nimb hel toes with this recalled hip. I have talked to a few others at the hospital u have experienced the foot drop with several THR. THe nerve is compromised in some way causing foot drop.

I cannot believe how THR surgery can become so complicated and cause life long issues.its as we all hope to improve our quality of life.

i am sincerely sorry to hear about foot drop. Now it another thing to fix.. Or to be concerned with foot support. There r special boot gear. My dad don't laugh hut a smal wheel on my moms foot brace so she could get around . It worked well for her. I hope u fing a resolution soon.Sometimes I feel like a broken down car. When it was just yesterday I was out riding playing hiking gaining & even cleaning & cooking.

      hi hope

i would like to thank you for your support  not a lot of ppl no enough about what can go wrong before they have there hip replacements cos the surgons dont give you enough time to ask everything you should no  about what they going to do and what they putting into your body before they want you out of the clinic before moveing on to next patient they dont have the time yes i feel like you 2rnd op how can they make a mistake twice and get away with it we don't no a quater what they doing to us in the theatre i always try to advise ppl to write down what they want to no now this has happened to me i was in only maybe in 10 mins if that you lucky to see them again before the op its sign here then of again you put your life in there hands you dont expect to be made a cripple they either have to re;do it or they cant rectify it mine cant be if any one told me they spent an hr talking to them i couldnt belive them they start the clinic at say 8 or 9 finish at 4 or 5 that only leaves probbly 6 or 7if thatts a day i cannot belive that. hr for break

i will have to get my hubby to do what you dad did for your mum when i get this brace i just cant belive what ive gone through and this happen we have had some hips recalled im in the UK dont know were you from but the nhs dont tell you this they get paid to still use them then when ppl complain they tell you it takes time to heal what yrs when you slowly getting poisened with the particles coming of them this is what happens going into blood stream will they admit it no they tell you its somert else thats causing it i suffered with my back all ive got you need to see a back specialist its nothing to do with what they could have caused ye only a number.to them

your right in what you have said.hope u get yours sorted too but not with another recalled hip. .

I agree u r SPOT ON.. Most THR patients have no clue. As much as we point out there are serious issues like our surgeries and not much is typically understood..

I posted the UK WALES... 2012 joint journal leaving info on studies of various manufactures of hip devices , a small excerpt.  Also suggested the web site to look at the many many issues with THR. This was an attempt to help educate the many factors involved .

Only two two members replied to that discussion .

PLZ SEE MY DISCUSSON   NJR 9th Annual Report 2012 metal on metal stemmed hip replacement in 2003... yet I received my mom stemmed replacement in the year 2011. There is seriously something wrong with this picture!
