Numbness

Hi, Since my TKR 11weeks ago, I have had various parts of my legs ( both) go numb. This has all gone except the outside of my knee cap right up to my scar. The other side of my scar isn't numb. Has anyone else got this?

    Yes, perfectly normal.

The outside of my knee cap is still numb after 23.5 weeks.

Just a matter of time, I'm afraid, before nerves grow back.

I have pretty much the same scar as you have for TKR from a skiing accident 21 years ago and I still have numb bits, some areas got the feeling back eventually but cut nerves often don't recover. One or two areas are quite painful whenI touch them wrong - probably the damaged nerves. I think it all depends where exactly they cut.

    Hi Caz

the outside of my knee is still numb my GP said it could stay numb as a nerve could have been damaged ...or...it could come back slowly

I'm 13 weeks post op and it's still numb I will mention it when I see the surgeon on the 31st Dec and let you know what he says

Thank you everyone. Nice to know I'm normal.

Linda, that must be awful. I think I'd rather be numb.

Yes it's not good,  back on tramadol at night as  I can't sleep.  I have to massage the knee every few hours.  I'm  17wks post and still having to use a stick outside.

      Hi

I still use a stick outside ..I don't feel confident enough to discard it just yet

i was put on tramadol but they really upset me ..so it's still restless nights and very little sleep ...my nights are not even pain free yet even with strong painkillers before bed.....

has anyone found a remedy for sleep apart from being clouted  with a hammer ...lol

I do find myself falling Sleep in the afternoons for a power nap

although what sort of power it gives me I have yet to find out.

hi caz ... yup, totally normal!  my surgeon explained that the nerves - contrary to what i thought - don't run straight down over your knee, they come from the inside of your knee, over your knee towards the outside.  your scar will testify, however, that these nerves have all been severed and many connections will be built up again with time, but some will not. i think it is highly unusual for somebody to have no numbness.  the outside of my knee is still swollen plus the numbness ... it makes for a very odd feeling when giving it a massage.

p.s. found one shop selling bio-oil today so got myself some.  my scar isn't half as nice as yours and quite sore in certain places.  hopefully the bio-oil will do the trick!

Bio oil is great stuff. My scar is just a thin line barely visible below the knee but still a bit red over the top of the knee

      worth every penny
