Numbness after surgery

Hi everyone.... I had TKR 15 hours ago. I had to have a general anaesthetic as I have arthritis in my spine spinal foraminal stenosis and damaged discs from L2/5 so they couldn't give me a spinal block. I also had a THR 22 months ago and that was absolutely great until i fell a couple of weeks sgo. Had a nasty fall i wad climbing up benches to get to cat. I know i know but too late now. Can I ask did anyone have a numb foot or toes or parts of their leg that was operated on? They are sending me for an mri in the morning but won't say why. Do you think I could have nerve damage from knee replacement or could it be my spine causing this problem smile thanks everyone hope you are all well.

    Hi Shirley

I could not feel my leg from my knee down for a couple of days. I hope all is well but I did feel as you do. It is a tough operation and I feel for you being in the early days. The MRI will tell your Doc how things are going. All I can say is stick with this forum. There is a wealth of information on here. Take your meds and don't  be afraid to ask for stronger ones if you need them. Ice and elevate reularly abd keep us updated on how you are doing. Take care.

Ahhh thank you I actually feel a bit more at ease now. I can't complain I'm only 19 hours post surgery. I need sleep but can't.

My guess would be that, they have given you some local anaesthetic into the knee joint area, and this has travelled down to your foot and toes, if it is that, it will wear off over the next few hours...good luck..

I think nearly all f us experience numbness in parts of the leg. . My thigh is numb right down to the outside of the knee and partly down the side of the leg under the knee . . also at times electric shoc tingling which intensifies to real pain . . .Surgeon says maybe caused by the tight tourniquet they put on the leg during the operatiuon affecting nerves, and that it will finally go away . . seven weeks and three days now, and the pain has certainly lessened although the numbness is still the same.  Still, believe me, numbness is a lot better than pain!  glad they are doing an mri for you . .that will hopefully show just what is going on.  VERY early days for you yet, so  don;t worry and hope you can soon sleep better. it is a problem for most of us!  I'm still taking sleeping tablets, but even those don't really seem to work.

I again ...I now day 3 and doing brilliantly. Had about 5 setbacks bc of my spinal stenosis as on back and leg locking up couldn't bend or move leg forward and was terribly painful. Having to explain over and over to different nurses that's it's not the replacementioned it's my spinal pain radiating. That took nearly 2 days and finally got the help I needed.give me a new hop any day to a knee

Yes, they are so focussed on the part they have just 'sorted out' that they tend to forget we are a whole body, with lots of problems in other parts as well as the  . . . . . knee!  I limp because I have hip and foot pain . . knee is working quite well, bt hard to stop limping with all the other pain going on. I also get pain radiating frtom a fractured vertebra . . It would be nice to wake up one morning with no pain, wouldn't it, but as a friend of mine says, if that happens . . you are probably dead!
