Numbness below the ankle

My mom (74) has been complaining of numbness below her ankle on both legs for couple of years now. she is diabetic and has issues with her kidney functionality. At the moment she is using a walker to move from one place to another and has very limited mobility. She cannot put her flips flops as she has lost the sensitivity in her toes. She lives a 3rd world country without the facilities and insight of the developed world. Her diagnosis has been that her nerves in her legs have been damaged by the years of diabetes. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to improve her situation. Thanks in advance.

Yes,the diagnosis of nerve damage is probably correct. It cant be corrected but there are a few things that may help a little.

Make sure your Mum takes her diabetic medication regularly as directed.

If your Mum is overweight try to encourage her to lose weight

Get her doctor to check her Vitamin B12 levels. She may need some supplement to her diet.

Make sure she checks her feet regularly for any cuts or sores as she may not feel any injury.
