Numbness of let hand for 20 months

Dear all,

I have numbness (tingling like being wrapped by sand paper) for my left hand and first 3 fingers since Feb 2014.   It's now nearly 20 months.

While the electrodiagnosis test shows only mild slowness, drugs, 1 steroid injection, 50+ physiotherapy, 50+ acupunture, 50+ chiropractor spine & arm joints adjustments all did not help.

Doctors could not confirm whether / how much a surgery on wrist can help but only say this is a low risk operation to try before they do anything on my neck spine.    Luckily (or unluckily) I can get used to the tingling and tight muscles without hurting my sleep much.

Any advice what I should do?   Or I should wait until it gets really bad that I cannot sleep / bear?

Thank you so much for your advice.

    Hi Chloe

I myself had the same numbness lack of sleep, after seeing my consultant I had open carpal tunnel surgery on my dominant left hand even though nothing showed on the nerve conduction test, once he was in there my menial nerve was squashed this was last December I am worse now than before but now in right elbow so painful waiting to go back to see him 11th November I also feel it at the back of my neck and was told this could be a trapped nerve affecting my arms?? I have heard people do have a second operation but my hands and fingers wake me as totally numb, I would go back again and tell them something needs to be done

    Hope you get it sorted.

My consultant sent me for an MRI scan on my neck to rule out that cause of the problem as well as the nerve test. My surgery was very successful and I would recommend anyone to have it once a firm diagnosis is confirmed.

      Hi Elaine,

I did MRI on both neck and wrist too. It was not conclusive as c3/4 is a bit slightly narrowed. But surgeon thinks spine surgery is too risky and hence too early to think about now. Thats the "reason" to consider surgerybon wrist first....

      Thanks a lot,

      Chloe
