Numbness when I wake up

Hi everyone,

I've posted numerous times on the forum, I'm suffering from a wide range of physical symptoms which my GP thinks is due to anxiety. This has been going on since October 2020 with different symptoms coming and going on a continual basis.

I've convinced myself I've got some sort of serious neurological condition, and its affecting every aspect of my life - because I feel so unwell on a daily basis.

My latest symptom which is causing me a lot of concern is numbness in my fingers and sometimes a completely numb arm when I wake up. I know that this can be caused by simply sleeping in the wrong position, and I have done that in the past once every so often.

My concern now is this numbness is happening probably 5 nights out of 7. Can waking up with numb fingers, hands, or arm be an anxiety symptom?

It's really bothering me. Has anyone else out there experienced this? Any responses would be appreciated.

Thanks

yes I have had that happen several times especially when I am highly anxious. And I’ve had it happen in more than one extremity such as my foot. In fact, when all this began in my 20s, I had the symptoms all at one time so I thought for sure I had A neurological condition. I had the numbness, tingling, eye floaters, shortness of breath, and several more symptoms . I still get these and more when I am highly anxious. Had all the testing done with A neurologist and it was OK. If you just want to get some peace of mind, visit a neurologist if the symptom doesn’t go away soon. But it does sound like what I had happen at Times. .

Thank you for your response. This has put my mind at rest somewhat.

I'm desperate for my GP to refer me to a neurologist so I can have any scans/testing done to rule out anything serious. Problem is my GP seems reluctant to refer me, and seems convinced that I'm suffering from anxiety & don't need referring. The GP is more interested in prescribing me tablets. I've been taking a medication for almost a month now for headaches & depression - so far the tablet has helped with neither.

How do I force a referral to a neurologist?

thats The tricky part. Try again and tell him that you really want to visit a neurologist because of your concerns. I don’t know why they are so reluctant to make referrals. he may be correct in that your symptom is related to anxiety but if you want to visit a neurologist it shouldn’t be a big deal for him. .

    Craig,

This is happening to me right now (the past few weeks). I've had health anxiety issues on and off for 25+ years and annoying symptoms like paresthesia (pins and needles), buzzing sensations in my feet & hands, lack of energy, rubber legs etc. I've been to three different neurologists during those years and they put me through a complete neurological assessment each time. And they all told me that I have anxiety. My current situation with the hands/arms falling asleep while asleep seems to be another extension of my history with anxiety as I have no neurological or physical deficits and I have just been through a very emotional time in my life which has only intensified the current symptoms. I hope this gives you some peace that anxiety can and will produce some very odd and persistent symptoms.
