NWB ankle operation January 2018

Hi every one!

I had a nasty fall Xmas eve and broke my ankle. I am a little oblivious to exactly where I broke it because of the pain meds at the time. 2 weeks later I receive the news that I need to have an operation.. so on the 8th January 2018 I had surgery with local anaesthetic. I was backing ward within an hour with my foot up and in a splint type cast. The pain was unbearable when i put my foot down to have my 1st toilet trip. Same the following day and night. From the 3rd day things started ro settle down. When leaving the hospital I was told to keep my foot up when possible to help with swelling.. inject my stomach every day with Tinzaparin & be NWB for 6 week's. The only pain I get now is where I think the cast is rubbing where the scar maybe on the outside ankle. I'm unsure if I have scars both sides of ankle it dosent feel like. I have my pre op appointment on Tuesday 23rd January 2018 & I'm very nervous of what the outcome will be. I was just wondering about other people's experiences.. any help and advice u can give. Worst experiences & better ones.

I'm so missing my social life!

Thanks everyone x

    Hi Kelly,

Christmas this year was a bummer for both of us. I have my post op on the 24th.

I have been told the feeling of rubbing on my ankle is most likely the stitches.

Good to hear you have no pain! I have nerve pain.

I hope all goes well for you on Tues.

I fell on December 17th and had surgery December 22nd. A few days after surgery I began feeling, what only can be described as my incision site healing--largely a tingling sensation around the incision. Still feel it 4 weeks post op. It also gets irritated when my cast pushes up against it. I went from the splint to a hard cast (only a week and half more of that) and next will go into a boot. When I went to my first post op appointment, they took out my staples and stitches and took x-rays before putting me in a hard cast.

    Good luck!

Hi Kelly!  I guess everyone likes to tell you that your Christmas present was most definitely not what you wanted!  Sorry about  the fall on Christmas Eve.  Was it icy?  I am in shock that you were able to return to work immediately.  All I can think of is that Tinzaparin must be good stuff!  If you were able to get through that, from now on after your two week appointment things should be smooth for you. It sounds like we had similar operations simply because I have the incision on my outside and had to be NWB for 6 weeks.  At 2 weeks,  my plaster was removed (it was a half cast) and my staples taken out which is uncomfortable but not painful.  I had to get an airboot which was a relief because I could take it on and off.  It hurt though, pushing on the incision so I did not wear it much except when I was going somewhere.  In my case, it was not for protection- the plate and screws were keeping my ankle in place so if I was comfortable having it off it was OK.  I only slept in it for the first week or so. Week 6 is great and if you have little pain now, you will be gone walking.  I had to walk one week in my boot.  Week 7 it was gone, I had a slight limp and was slow on stairs.  Week 8 , my incision and the area still aches now and then, I hope that is normal and the tissues just growing around the plate and screws.  I have a post op in 3 weeks and a bit which is my week 12 so hopefully all is good by then.  You are a huge trooper for working so soon, I literally lay on the couch for at least two weeks.  I am a teacher too and have to move all the time and could not imagine how I could do my job, so I took the 3 weeks off before Christmas, then luckily had two weeks holiday so I did not go back until I was weightbearing just after week 6.

    Good luck!!
