Occupational therapist or Social Services

Posted , 3 users are following.

I am off work with mild to moderate depression. I live alone and have no visitors or support from family or anyone else. I find it hard to motivate myself to look after the flat or myself. And tend to lose interest in things quite easily. Probably as a result of being alone. I believe I may be able to get some support but don't know whether I need to go to social services or occupational health.

I feel a bit embarresed about asking for help so any advice would bee appreciated thanls.

    Hi,

If you go to your GP and ask for further help then they should be able to refer you to the relevant support services available to you.

Where I live they referred me on to someone on the NHS and I have been allocated a care worker and another person who phone me and come and see me at home and give me suggestions on activities to do to help with the depression and to just generally keep an eye on me and help me feel like I have support.

They also refer people to something called Talking Therapies where I live, although it may be different where you are, but there should be an NHS counselling service where they offer support like CBT.

Your GP should also be able to refer you to a Psychiatrist - depends if you're already on medication which isn't working and needs changing, or your GP is unsure of your diagnosis.

Also remember that there are always people on here to talk to if you need advice or if you're having really bad thoughts.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Becca. I have an appointment with my GP next week and will ask then. I have been through the talk therapies and found they were ok at the time but once I got back home was back to square one.

As my depression is only considered as mild to moderate I doubt If I would be considered bad enough to need a psychiatrist or CBT.

I have read about the support you talk about but was just unsure who I need to approach

    Hello,

I know exactly how you feel Djgordy. I also live alone & have cut myself away from people over the years & now feel totally lost & alone. I too am off work with depression & anxiety & have been since November. So don't think you are alone. If you do find anything out on places to go please do let me know as i do think getting out may help me more & seeing people in the same situation as me.

Keep in touch & take care
