Odor Hypersensitivity

For a little over a week now, my wife and I have had a considerably strong chest cough.  We have window Air Conditioner units that have been operating since the end of May.  We clean the filters regularly.

Aside from that, I have had what appears to be some form of hypersensitivity to odors for over a week.  In particular, that hypersensitivity is triggered by chemical odors from cleaning compounds.  It manifests in the form of a bitter taste in the back of my mouth, as if I am tasting the odor rather than smelling it.

Today, I returned home after our cleaners left, and immediately, my mouth reacted.  A bitter taste completely overtook the back of my mouth, which was overpowering to the point where I couldn't really smell the cleaning chemicals (mopping solution), but could taste the bitterness strongly.

I am curious as to what may be causing this, and whether or not it may be a sign of a much more serious problem.
