oesophageal LP?

Has anyone any experience of this? My gp has been treating me for oral thrush for a year. He did blood tests and my immune system is fine. Until two weeks ago, the various anti fungals were keeping it under control but not clearing it up. Now, I have an inflamed oesophagus and have been referred for a scope. Max fax is taking forever. I was referred the 4 months ago. Anyway my dentist has always been in agreement with gp until today when he says he thinks it is LP. Apparently this too can travel down your gullet. Gp has queried this also in yhe past but refuses to prescribe steroids until a diagnosis has been made. He said if he does give me steroids and it's thrush, it will get out of control and given it wont respond properly to anti fungals, it would end up a hospital job. I cant eat now due ti the inflamation so was given 50mg fluconazole daily and this is max dose? Also lansoprazole which melt on tongue. I had reflux surgery 7 yr ago so it could possibly be this flaring up and causing the gastric problem rather than the thrush/LP. Just wondered if any1 knows anything about it going into oesophagus?

Yes,  I have oral and esophageal  and opthlamic LP.  I had a gastrscope about 4 months ago and was treated with flagel x 7  days and the this me completely cleared me  until just recently. When you have your scope and if they do a biopsy ask your MD if an experienced pathologist well be checking the biopsy since LP  it is easily missed. I have also been treated with IM steriods also.  I wish you the best.

    Hi,

I've only just joined this forum so this is my first post on this subject.  I was diagnosed last week with oesophageal LP after years of trying to discover what the problem was.  I've had swallowing problems for the last few year and have been admitted to A&E several time when food got stuck in my gullet.  At first they thought it was an oesophageal pouch, then eosinophilic oesophagitis.  I have a couple of strictures found during a gastroscopy.  The biopsies didn't show a high level of eosinophils so they investigated further and have now diagnosed LP.  I don't have it on any other areas of my body.  I've been told that steroids can help but I don't like to take medication long term and I'm allergic to Lanzaprosole (and I don't suffer from reflux anyway).  I recently underwent a procedure where my gullet was stretched with a balloon via an endoscope.  This worked very well indeed.  It will be repeated with a broader balloon in a few weeks and I hope my swallowing difficulties will go away.  I eat a vegan diet with fish and try to avoid all chemicals and medication where possible.  I've also looked into sulphites as a trigger, which are found in wine, beer and cider and dried fruits as a preservative.  LP is an autoimmune condition and I'm working on the basis that something is triggering the problem.  I was also diagnosed with benign MS a couple of years ago but most of my symptoms have been relieved by my dietary efforts.  It's like trying to solve some sort of murder mystery.  I'm pretty sure it's all linked - it's just trying to work out what the link is.  Would be interested to hear any thoughts or suggestions.

Hi Penny, I have esophageal LP which was diagnosed several years ago. Dilating my esophagus initially made it better but caused tremendous long term damage due to the Kebnerization that occured. (Abonormal healing in Lichen Planus). If you have to have dilation again a helpful treatment to reduce this damage is a mixture of Budesonide (a steroid usually used for asthma), spleda (artificial sweetner) and water. You drink the mix twice a day. My doc at Mayo Clinic, David Katzka recommended it. The mahor downside to prolonged use of this is thrush (candida), so be on the look out for it after a couple of weeks of use. The nice thing about it is that it is a very small amount of steroid and is topically coating your esophagus so you get none of the side effects of ssystemic steroid use smile Currently I am on intra venous Rituxan for my esophagus every six months. Wishing you well.

I have been suffering with LP for 2years.Recently i visited my GP with severe wheezing and dry throat at night. As i was having really bad reflux for about 3weeks he suggested i go for a neck ultra sound.Meanwhile i've been using a steroid puffer which has got rid of wheezing but throat is still incredibly sore.He also thinks LP could be a probable cause.

Hi Jennifer, have things improved for you? I have oral and esophageal LP. I developed respiratory issues similar to asthma around the same time. The respiratory issues have worsened in tandem with my LP and abated when I received Rituxan. They have not responded to the traditional treatments for asthma and my docs are now of the opinion that the two (respiratory) and esophageal and oral LP are linked. If I can be of any help let me know.

      Wishinfg you the best!

Hi Karen, I have oral and esophageal LP. I don't have any cutaneous or genital LP. My oral was diagnosed on biopsy many years ago after my dentist discovered it. Unfortunately my esophageal symptoms were seen as a separate entity. The medical field are only recently starting to think of LP as a systemic disease. Hope it helps get us further along in terms of finding a cause, treatment and cure. Hope you have some good docs and are feeling well!
