Oesophageal Spasm help

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have had ongoing chest and heartburn pain for 18 months now and although previously had acid reflux a 24hr PH manometry which shows i dont have acid reflux any more i appear to have Oesophageal Spasms and dismobility.

Does anyone have any advice on this with what i can do to help this as i know it will probably be about 2 months before i see my gastroenterologist following this test as so fed up with being in pain on a daily basis

Everyone with Achalasia is different, but warm water works for me.  The temperature is critical for me.  It has to be a mixture of half cold and half boiling.  If I drink the water when I first feel the pain and before it sets in, I can usually stop the pain in it's tracks.  Hugging a hot water bottle on my chest also does the trick - especially useful at night when drinking something and then lying down to sleep is more likely to lead to choking.  I also find fizzy drinks can be helpful.

Other people find cold water works for them.  It's trial and error to find out what works for you.

You might find some more ideas in the files under the "More" section of the London Achalasia Meetup Group.

I hope it works for you.  I have worked out over the years exactly how much to drink to get the best results.  Now I don't have to think about it as dealing with it is second nature.

One thing that can set off spasms for me if my chest gets cold.  I wrap up warm and avoid breathing in cold air - particularly pertinent at this time of year.

    Hi Nicola,

My quick fix for heartburn is copious amounts of cool milk - which works a treat every time.  Fortunately, my episodes of heartburn are fairly infrequent; but since yours are regular, then I would recommend having a ready supply in a wee cooler-bag, or similar.  I do know how stressful and painfil it can be if you are unable to get some form of relief.

All the best with finding whatever works for you.

    Regards,

    Mick
