Hi, yes I've been diagnosed with lichenoid oesophagus or oesophageal lichen planus and have it in my mouth.  Only way to diagnose is with biopsy.  It's very rare and may get missed.  Acid reflux has nothing to do with it and I reacted badly to the medication when they tried it on me - lansoprazole/omsoprazole.  I didn't have acid reflux at all, it is just the first thing they think of.

You need to ask them to do that biopsy.  Good luck!

Thanks for your reply I went for an endoscopy last month and asked the doctor if there may be a connection because I have oral lp and he said no straight away didn't even give me chance to say anything else. I have been on lansoprazole but I also don't get on very well with the medication. They took biopsies but do you know if they test them for lichen planus if they don't can I ask them to . The results of the ones I had say inflammation. It took years to be diagnosed with it in my mouth they kept saying it was thrush I also have it vaginally which again took ages to be diagnosed .

I had several misdiagnoses before the biopsy.  The consultant was very surprised by the result and said that it was extremely rare and clearly linked to OLP in mouth.

You need to ask them to do a biopsy to specifically look for LP I'd say.  They might not have seen it before.  Clearly the inflammation is caused by something.

You are your best advocate and need to keep pushing them.

I to eat a very bland diet so as not to make my mouth sore . I was having difficulty swallowing that's why I went to the doctor the endoscope showed inflammation and an ulcer I think the ulcer must have healed cos I don't feel that now but sometimes when I swallow I can feel it going down I think some of it is due to anxiety which is made worse by having to wait for results etc I have to see the doctor next week so will try and get some answers . What are your symptoms ?

I have had reflux symptoms for quite a few years but I just took gaviscon and it was fine but it went worse a few months ago and that's when I went to the doctors. The oral lp was diagnosed a few years ago I had a biopsy taken to confirm it . But I haven't had a diagnosis for oesphagus yet the doctor doesn't seem to think there's a connection but after reading other threads on here I think there could be .what are your symptoms ?

My symptoms were difficulty swallowing.  Had an endoscopy and was found to have a narrowed oesophagus.  The gastroenterologist did a stretch with a balloon and took a biopsy.  Originally, he diagnosed eisinophilic oesophagitis but the biopsy showed the very rare lichenoid oesophagus.  Since then I've had a further stretch and have been able to swallow relatively normally for the last 18 months.  I'm not taking any medication but following a largely vegan diet with plenty of flax oil and vitamin d. I do eat fish.  I have to avoid chilli, which is really painful but apart from that I'm managing OK.  I've never had any problems with acid reflux.
