OH NO, laying on right side for enemas for a month, is this a problem?!

I've had enemas for a month and without realising I've been laying on my right side. I was never told by a doctor to lay on my self side but on the Internet it says I should. I have proctitis, does this mean that my enemas are doing nothing? Will they work? ASAP

It doesn't really matter which side you lay on , its usually just easlier to insert the emema on your left. Please don't worry they will work just  the same.

Hi .brooke.you lie on your left side .doctor should have told you that.it may work better now.as the enama puts a film over the colon.keep trying if it dosn't work after a while you may go on azathioprine. Good luck let us know how you get on .x

Hey, thank you for your reply. Would it be okay if I inserted the enema whilst on my right side and then swapped over to my left once ive finished or am I better off just trying to get used to doing it on my left side?

Yes you could do that swop over straight away.you must be left handed.as it was easier for me to lie on left then just stay there for half hour.

It's funny you say that because I am actually right handed but do a lot of tasks such as using my knife in my left hand. I laid on my right side because I can get what I need from my desk. Will it make a difference if I just do it on my left side or just swap straight over, I will give it a go on my left side. Thank yousmile

Honestly it does not matter which side , its is just anatomiacally easier for you to lie on the left . The most important thing is that they are inserted in the rectum and stay there i.e often better in lie in bed for half hour after insertion. Obviously if you get up and move around too much gravity will make them more down wards and they need to stay put, I'm a nurse so feel justifed by say this.

How long should I lay there for? I usually wait around 10 minutes as that's what it says on the pack

Hi Brooke,20 minutes to half an hour.It 's got to have time to get up there and make a film on the colon .it certainly helped me.

It dissolves with your body heat , so I would try and lie ther for half hour if you just have to do it daily. My 16 yr oold daughter has UC and that i why I am on the site . I get her to insert it at bedtime and that way she does not get up after it goes in. I guess if you do it more often then it would be impractical for you to wait more than 10 mins.

I am only 17 so young also, I have tried to do it before bed but the feeling makes me unable to go to sleep so I usually do it an hour or two before so I'm only say or laid on the sofa after anyway. I will lay there for 20-30 minutes then. Thank you so much for the advice ladies x

Yes you are young too. Try and think postively about it, I am sure in time the right medication will resolve things, we are currently having flare ups and trying to get the right meds to control the symptoms. I guess for the moment its a bit of trial and error but in time you will get there . Wishing you good luck .
