I've read a lot of posts. This medication WILL cause weight gain. My mother was on it. She gained a ton of weight and became severely diabetic... No previous risk for diabetes. She was taken off immediately following diabetic ketoacedosis, but the damage was already done. From her experience, the side effects of this medication are worse than the disease.

Ann the posts were under olanzapine or zyprexa, I think. This was about a year ago that I read them initially.

To put it simply, DON'T TAKE IT, I'd ask for something else, you will put on alot of weight which you will not be able to shift, pretty much sleep all the time [you'll know when you've missed a dose as you won't be getting to sleep], also Olanzapine is toxic to the Pancreas & causes blood sugar levels to rise, after 3 years of taking 10mg a day I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which is when the Doctor took me off of it very slowly, finally after a year of hell with withdrawal from it I was off it completely, up & active & back to my usual weight but now have to deal with Diabetes.

Obviously everybody's different & may react to it differently but would seriously advise asking the Doctor for something else.

He thought about it and said maybe risperidone, do you think that would be better?

I agree with Doc. Find another med. They put my mom on Latuda for a while. I read the side effects from that and decided to try without. We also did herbs and TCM. She didn't seem to have a recurrence of the voices.

Really, after the diabetic ketoacedosis, twice, she flatlined, and had a stroke and a lot of brain damage. So seriously, a very dangerous drug.

I dont know what other drugs help. When I got my mom with it enough, we did some counseling and she slept better than she ever has.

Do you think maoi would help as ive been advised

Risperidone is actually what the Doctor put me on after taking me off the Olanzapine fully, but I've never actually taken it, due to worry of side effects of anti psychotic drugs, since the Olanzapine I read through the leaflets of everything I take now & make my own decision.

Risperidone is the better one of the two, it still causes weight gain & drowsiness but nowhere near as much as Olanzapine, if I had to take one of them it would be Risperidone.

Very interesting.  It just seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut as i am not psychotic, i have anxiety and depression which is unresponsive so its being used to augment - anyhoughts on this?   I was expecting to be givn MAOI or similar before this route

You sound just like me,  have you managed without using the risperidone still?  How can you manage your day without some treatment? I am assuming you have an anti depressant in place still.

I am just not getting better from this awful anxiety.  GP is now becoming frustrated with me because I havent opened the packs of either risperidone or olanzapine for augmentation which were suggested by psychiatrist.  I just feel I cannot go on like this, my days are not normal, my social life has plummeted and I find it hard to do the simplest of tasks.  I can see exactly where you are coming from and feel like you that these are hard core meds.   However I have to do something and I am thinking of trying out a short term on one of these, much against my principles.   I note you think risperidone the better, what I cannot understand is why has he given me the choice of one, then maybe the other.  I have had diazepam at night for some time and I wonder if risperidone or olanzapine might help me get off this if they help sleep? Not sure if I mentioned I do not have psychosis, its unipolar depression.

If you're not psychotic you might have much less problem taking this medicine and then coming off it when your social life has stabilised. I have no notion for why this might be the case, but in most people that I've read about that have been trying to quit, they can't sleep. I was given it to be able to sleep.

If you have no problem sleeping maybe it's not such a bad drug, but as is usual, for extreme cases such as mine, it was mainly used as it does something to halt me. Good luck.

I haven't taken an antipsycotic since February 2016, but I do still take 40mg Fluoxetine for depression, in myself I haven't had a problem since coming off but have suffered insomnia ever since & have taken pills such as Zopiclone & now taking Nytol & Melatonin which works a treat, thinking about it with that & taking Olanzapine before I haven't had a natural night's sleep in 7 years.

It could be the Doctor wants to see how you react to the two so he can work out what's better for you, you say you're not psychotic & it's more anxiety, I've heard Amitryptiline is used for anxiety. Do you take any antidepressents?

Hi,thanks for your reply. Yes, i have been given mirtazapine but its not doing much so he says augment anti dep properties of it with risperidone or olanzapine. A lot of people are saying dont touch it, its for bipolar. In a quandary now what to do. This is not helping my anxiety!

PS I cannot have amitriptyline or some others as I take warfarin since pulmonary embolisms

It was for just sleep due to marijuana and the fear that was preventing me from sleeping. Sleeplessness causes temporary psychosis so if you can't sleep well it will affect you. But the fear I had was still there even after I stopped the med. So as is typical, it took a year to learn how to sleep again.

Well, tried the risp. Hell on earth, can hardly leave the house. Nausea, unmotivated and tired as well.  Just feel ill and all the depressive feelings back. Only one slight improvement is less diazepam.  Cant toleratevthese though, i have no life and feel ill. Bin i think.

That's exactly what I did with them after a few days, I haven't taken any antiphsychotic or antidepressent in over a year now. The only problems I get is bad insomnia still. It maybe a long shot but have you looked into a supplement called 5-HTP? It does something for Serotonin levels then converts to melatonin which is great for someone who can't sleep. They say it's a natural Prozac, it maybe something to read up on.

Is this true? I would try it if someone could advise me definitively about it.
