Omeprazole

a messsage for Eileen I first started taken Omeprazole when I was taking naproxen before I was diagnosed with PMR. When I first saw the Rheumatologist he gave me a prescription for Predesolone, and  a prescription for Omeprazole.

Someone on this forum recently said they felt bloated taking it and you suggested something else but I can’t remember, what it was

that worked exactly the same and would I need to get it from the doctors.

Thank you

Ranitidine, sold OTC as Zantac at the chemist. You would have to ask the pharmacist if the dose on prescription is the same as OTC - I've never taken it myself.

    Margaret -

When you state that it was suggested that there is something else that "worked exactly the same" please note they are two completely different classes of medication with different mechanisms of action.

Omeprazole (Prilosec) is a proton pump inhibitor and Ranitidine (Zantac) is an H-2 antagonist.

They may be used for similar purposes but they don't work exactly the same.

That's being picky although you are correct and in my original comment I probably did explain they have different mechanisms which is why they have different side effects. For the patient they work the same - they both reduce stomach acid.

I was not commenting on your comment and I have no doubt you distinguished between the two in your original post.

I was clarifying Margaret's statement so that she is clear on the facts that they are different.
