Omeprazole not working anymore

Long story but I will try to make it short: April this year I started having this burning sensation in my stomach between breastbone and navel. I also had some upper abdominal pain and nausea. This was after taking Naproxen for 2-3 weeks. Went to docs and was prescribed lansoprazole. It didn’t do anything but after a while the nausea and pain were gone, but the burning sensation was still there. Went back to the doctors, was tested for h. pylori (sorry if that’s the wrong spelling) which came out negative. Was told to try Gaviscon which didn’t work. Went back and was prescribed 40mg of Omeprazole a day. It started working almost straight away. No more burning, just other symptoms just as coughing and post nasal drip. That went away after a while as well and I was fine for about 6 weeks. Burning came back once again and I went back to the doctors and they told me to get back on Omeprazole and watch my diet but it’s not working anymore. They said to go back in a month if the problem is not fixed to get an endoscopy. I’m going to book an appointment for that but I’m so scared. Now the burning has moved up to my chest and I also have symptoms such as regurgitation and burping. The only foods that I know of that don’t give me a heartburn are nuts, toast and bananas. I’m trying to keep my weight up as I’m really close to being underweight and it’s hard to do so if I can only eat bread. I’m scared of the endoscopy as it might show something severe. This burning in my stomach everyday must have caused serious damage. I want to do an elimination diet but how so? I have no clue. Can someone guide me? Just wish someone could give me hope. This weekend is my birthday so I really wish I could have a few drinks with my friends but I’m so scared I might diet. Will I be okay if I’ll have a cocktail or two? I’ve not had any alcohol in a month and don’t normally drink.

    Dear maria

I was on omeprezole for some time when i had gastitisbut then it gave me an upset stomach with alot of gas and i went on to zantac which for me cleared it eventually. It does take some time to heal and before the gastitis i had the burning in upper chest where i think it was more oesophagitis then. I know what you mean about worrying about how long it goes on for. I had an endoscopy and the gastitis was confirmed. The burning etc and pain can seem quite severe cant it. Do you have your bed elevated? How long have you had these symptoms for? The gastitis took some months to clear

I don't think I can elevate my bed unfortunately so i always wake up with my stomach feeling a bit burnt. Do you have any suggestions on how to elevate my bed?

Started quite bad in April this year and I had the burning until July and then i was fine until september when it started again. i was able to eat whatever i wanted without any meds for 2 months. idk how. i am going to book an appointment with a doctor tomorrow. so stressed and worried about this. other people that have lived with this issue for years give me hope. i just hope i won't die from it...

      Dear Maria

I know how exactly you feel but i did recover from it obviously with my hernia I have to be careful, as it might flare up again. I recently went on a travelling holiday up to scotland and all the sitting in car and not sleeping in my bed made it feel like it was stirring up again! I elevated our bed with some blocks of wood underneath the two top legs of the bed. X

hi maria, sorry you are feeling like this. it really sounds like reflux esophagitus , thats reflux with swelling.i had all your symtoms too. it took me 12 weeks for my pain to ease off, but ive since been diagnosed with a hitus hernia. you would be amazed at how many people have these symtoms, try not to be worried because i was too and it completeley took over my whole thought process. i was absolutely terrified about getting the endoscopy, just like you, worried about results etc, but you are over thinking, that can make you ill and anxious.....have a few cocktails but not in an empty stomach. also i was prescribed naproxan for a sore leg, but the doctor took me off them imediately, he says it causes severe heartburn in some people. i took liquorice pills, they have a healing effect for ulcers on the esophagus, which i also had. so when i got my second endoscopy everything had healed up well apart from the hernia the seen. also the endoscopy was a piece of cake, seriously i boak when brushing my tounge, i opted for light sedation and couldent remember a thing. take one day at a time, go enjoy your birthday and give yourself a break from worry. im so sure you will fine, exact same symtoms as most people on this chat.xx

Thank you so much for your comment! I really needed this, thanks for being so positive. I have felt better mentally today and I am trying not be anxious because it makes symptoms worse. I will ask doctor to send me for an endoscopy because we really need to see what's going on in there or I will never be at peace. I am looking forward to celebrating my birthday on Saturday and I hope I won't feel too bad after. Thanks again!
