I had scope few years back and told bottom 2 inches of oesophagus has been burnt so was on omneprazole once a day with no issues. Fee months back had a major flare up and ibs too. Put on esomeprazole twice daily, peptac as well as buscopan for ibs and on 6 week course of iron tablets. Thought it was all eventually starting to ease but now I'm waking in the morning feeling like I have catarh and feeling sick....even though I following the meds regime. Have tried raising bed etc but didn't make a difference. I eat well, not overweight and otherwise ok. This is really getting me down though. Any advice?

Your drugs are good for controlling acid and other problems but will not control reflux.

Sounds as if you are experiencing extra-oesophageal reflux (sometimes called LPR) which I have had all my life.

We usually only think of the reflux from stomach to oesophagus (Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux) which is usually acidic so is treated with acid suppressants. This makes the reflux less damaging but Non-Erosive Reflux may persist. It can traverse the full height of the oesophagus and breach the upper sphincter whence it can aspirate into the respiratory system.

The advice to reduce reflux is to make lifestyle changes - some of which it sounds as if you are trying.

Do not overfill your stomach - eat little and often. Avoid exercise after food that involves compressing shaking or tilting a full stomach. Walking after a meal helps peristalsis empty the stomach. Leave at least 3 hours between last meal and bed.

If lifestyle changes don't work you may need to consider surgery (fundoplication) . I had that 9 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.
