one inflammed and bloodshot eye

hi there my names Andy and im new to this site and i just wanted to share my problem to see if anyone had any ideas

all started in about febuary i started noticing my right eye would get slighty bloodshot, it would start normally in the night time but somtimes in the day and normally would clear up on its own, anyway it ketp returning so i made a trip to morefields in london and they said i had conjunctivitis, thats fine and precribed me some anitbiotic and steroid drops and i carreid on, i thought they was working but then my one bloodshot eye kept returning so i was thinking these are not working, so i went back and they give me different ones to see if they would work, perservative free this time incase i was allergic to perservatives, any way started using them again, thought they was working until i noticed my right eye was still getting bloodshot.. so now im 10 months down the line and i still have this problem except now i have full blown episodes of full bloodshot right eye and inflamed eye starting from the middle all the way around the eye until the other side, the bloodshot is now 10 times as bad, ive seen 10 different ophthalmic doctors now in morefields every different eyedrop known to man and had most of them diagosted me with something different every time, conjunctivitis, dry eye, blepaharitis, exema.. there where all wrong so i went private and the doctor said i have got oils in my eyes so diagenosed me with blepaharits.. and right my eyes might have signs of blepahartis but its no way the cause of one imflammed and bloodshot eye, for the simple face that it does not excist in one eye symtoms only, and blephartis is on the line of the eyelids where the hairs grow not inside the eye.. since then it has cost me over £2000 in seeing him  for lots of bloodtest, cymidia, herpies, thyroid eye desese, swabs, also had a ct scan.. they all come back fine..

he keeps saying its the blephartis but im 100% sure its not, no systoms of blep at all, just the bloodshot and imflammed eye and it never clears up now.. also if i drink alcohol which i dont do much omg does it bring it on, i know we all get a bit bloodshot eyes when we drink but not one fully bloodshot swelled eye and one normal

has anyone got any ideas of my problem, i really dont think its eye related as ive had so many different eye exams.. my vision is completely fine too

Thanks

Hi I have had inflamed and red eyes for 10 months have had lots of tests like you and they say it's long term conjunctivis. once I get used to the steriods drops it comes back and is really uncomfortable and gets me down. I am waiting for an allergy test in case I am allergic to something, but in the meantime I am still on different types of steriods.Hope you find a solution very soon regards Bev

hi there, sorry to hear that you have had this problem for so long too, where mine is only in one eye, conjuncitivis im totally ruled out as it would of spread to my other eye in no time, if yours is in both eyes it does seem more likely that it would be a allergy as that is one hell of a long time to have conjunctivis

hope you find a solution too

Do you have a follow up appointment at Moorfields?  Next time you go, ask to see the Consultant and tell him/her that every time you go, you are being given conflicting opinions and diagnoses.

It sounds as though you do have Blepharitis but, having been on steroid eye drops, they need to be tapered when you come off them, otherwise you get a rebound reaction and your eye flares up again.  Your Ophthalmologist needs to explain this to you and also you need to be told how to deal with the Blepaharitis.

hi ther yes they have told me many techics how to deal with the blepatis but none work, just make my eye more bloodshot, ive got no bhephatis symtoms and it does not exits in just one eye.. no cases ever found, most of moorefield doctors are onyt trained to give you steroid drops thats all they know unless its to do with sight, but my eyesight is fine, im really starting to think it has something to do with a untreated abscess in my mouth, have had root canel before but it didnt treat it, had x ray yesterday and its still there but not pain, i know theres some connection with your upper jaw and eye so am having the tooth taken out tomorrow. thanks for your reply

Moorfields is a Specialist Eye Hospital and I cannot believe that the doctors are only 'trained to  give you steroid drops'

Why are you going there?  You are very lucky to have been referred there.

If you don't understand what you are being told, then tell them that you don't understand.

      Follow their instructions carefully.

hi.. you dont need to be refurred to them, you can just walk in, theres a a&e department, any one can go, then if they think theres a problem they refer to to a specialist, believe ive seen many of them there, still all diagnosing me wrong, ive stopped going to them and went private, and my new ophthalmic told me i deffo have not got dry eyes or conjuntivitis or eczema which specialist in moorefieds diagosed me with many times, and i know hes right because ive got none of the symtoms.. im only telling my story of what has happened, im just saying that most of the specilist i saw there kept giving me different diagnoses.. of course moorfields have a good history as one of the best thats why i went there in the first place.. i keep explaining its not the blephatis thats causing the problem as i stated it doesent exist in one eye, there techics just make it worse, thats why im here to see if anyone has had a similar problem.

      regards

Thanks, I think I will pay privately for an allergy test after Xmas as the NHS waiting list is so long. Fed up of being diagnosed differently each time I see someone at the hospital, Hope you get sorted soon as well regards Bev

Hi Andy, if you go into google you will find some interesting articles on subconjunctival hemmorhage.  Maybe be you will get some ideas there of what could cause your eye problem or perhaps you have already looked at that.  Hope you get answers soon as eye problems are not much fun.

    Hi Andy,

I have had some similar symptoms to what you are describing over the past few years & my doctors were unable to come up with a reason for my eye inflammation.  It used to happen almost every few weeks, but now, for some unknown reason, it occurs about once every 3 or 4 months (I'm glad about that!)  I use steroid eye drops when I get a flare-up.  The closest thing I found by my own reseach is a condition called "Episcleritis".  It is midly painful, my eye feels tender to the touch if I press gently on my closed eye, is all red, but my vision is normal.  It usually goes away with the drops in 2 or 3 days, but I have had it last a week.  The inflammation can be in either eye.  Hope this helps.  Linda

hi.. Thanks linda its not a bad shout but im unsure wether its the same or not, does your eye inflame all around the lower lid and the corner of the eye or is it just bloodshot? i really dont rate eye doctors in this day and age.. im hearing this more and more where the doctors havent got a glue whats going on.. even my gp said that blep in one eye dosent exsist, ive only got very mild blep in both eyes and it seem because the eyes doctors dont know what it is they lend to jump all over it, i would rather them just be truthful and say thay dont know what is it!

      regards

since january i have had 1 eye bloodhsot and painfull , specialy to light couldn't even open the eye, clears up within 2-7 days.

started when i broke a tooth ,so a visit to detist who could do nothing until infection went,3 types of antibiotics later and blood shot eye every cple of weeks they decided to take out the tooth in hope to stop the eye. so now its april and 1 tooth removed and 1 root canal  later and things seem to be getting better. but it was like clockwork everytime i went to dentist cple days later eye became bloodshot, i told my GP, eye specialist and both said the chances of the infection causing this was slim, i wasn't too sure theyw ere right, after all it's my eye. so in case your struggling with the eye and having dental probs then it could be worth asking . i have never had a blood shot eye, until my tooth problem and now it's all over the eye seems to be getting less and less.
