One month in and still some questions

So, I'm finally settling into my diagnosis of HSV 1 and learning that this isn't a death sentence and life goes on.

I have been so full of guilt thinking I could have passed this on to my then partner who has MS. Now as the fog has lifted, I am starting to wonder if he gave this to me.

He was reluctant to wear a condom due to lack of sensation because of his MS. I was sympathetic and trusted him. Almost exactly 2 weeks after we spent a great weekend together, I had my first and worst outbreak. At the same time of my outbreak he was experiencing a sore and swollen penis.

He tested negative just a few days after my outbreak, but his dr told him to be retested in 2 months.

Could he have tested false negative?

Did he get the sore swabbed? And it is possible for a false negative. I too went through something similar however when I asked for proof of the "negative" result..my then partner had a different story.

He told me he had a blood test and it was negative. The dr told him to go back in 2 months to get retested. I too will ask for the proof.

Which test did you both do, out of interest?

Did he test by IgG in hat case? Fyi, a false negative is possible, even with IgG, especially for HSV-1. Apparently the test is a little less sensitive for Type 1 than Type 2. Also, a false negative is always possible with any test, if tested too soon from infection. So, either it's an existing infection that got missed, or a new infection that's not yet detectable, so good that he's re-testing in 2 months.

Btw, Type 1 is usually (if not mostly) contracted via oral sex. I know you mentioned his penis being sore and swollen at the time, but did you notice anything around his mouth as well? Has he ever had cold sores, even if only as a child?

Also, can I transmit to some one if he performs oral sex on me if I don’t have a break out?

I reckon he has an existing infection that was somehow missed by the test and that you caught it from him via oral sex. Even without a cold sore in years, he can still occasionally shed, especially when ill with something else (or for no reason at all!).

You cannot pass it via receptive oral sex to someone who has ever had a legit cold sore, as that means they also have HSV-1 for life. Kinda obvious, but just saying! So you and your current bf are fine.

However, an HSV-1 negative person *could* acquire it orally (and/or less likely genitally), but if you avoid prodromes/outbreaks and wait 3-4 months, the odds should be low (but not zero).
