One month in and still some questions

So, I'm finally settling into my diagnosis of HSV 1 and learning that this isn't a death sentence and life goes on.
I have been so full of guilt thinking I could have passed this on to my then partner who has MS. Now as the fog has lifted, I am starting to wonder if he gave this to me.
He was reluctant to wear a condom due to lack of sensation because of his MS. I was sympathetic and trusted him. Almost exactly 2 weeks after we spent a great weekend together, I had my first and worst outbreak. At the same time of my outbreak he was experiencing a sore and swollen penis.
He tested negative just a few days after my outbreak, but his dr told him to be retested in 2 months.
Could he have tested false negative?

Btw, Type 1 is usually (if not mostly) contracted via oral sex. I know you mentioned his penis being sore and swollen at the time, but did you notice anything around his mouth as well? Has he ever had cold sores, even if only as a child?

You cannot pass it via receptive oral sex to someone who has ever had a legit cold sore, as that means they also have HSV-1 for life. Kinda obvious, but just saying! So you and your current bf are fine.
However, an HSV-1 negative person *could* acquire it orally (and/or less likely genitally), but if you avoid prodromes/outbreaks and wait 3-4 months, the odds should be low (but not zero).
