One week post op just completed my first PT

I was feeling real good about myself...i thought i was right on schedule but now im not so sure..it literally feels like ive been hit by a bus. Granted im being overly dramatic since we were only working out my leg...but it hurts..maybe i went wrong with not popping a pain pill before...but i dont want to rely on pills and become a pill popping animal. Was this to soon for PT or is it natural to feel weak and limpy after the first session. They said its because i was on crutches for so long my muscles weaken and the fact that i dont have an appetite since surgery isnt really helping either because i need protein in order for my muscles to grow.

That was normal for me, was able to walk the next day, harder when you get home. I adjusted for my second hip and worked out fine. I hit a wall 2 months after. Now it's been a year. Everything let your doc know.

Hi only one week is not long to be on crutches and its quits normal to feel totally shattered after PT, or maybe you were on crutches before op, your doing really well to be pushing hard after only a week.

Chill and don't be scared to use pain meds instead of suffering

Yes i was on crutches for almost a year before i had surgery...so my muscle memory is horrible. I popped a pain pill today because i couldnt raise my leg really..which shocked me..after surgery they gave me a walker and i look good with this walker but once they take the walker away from me my leg turns into a wet noodle

    hi brittni,

take a rest day ... try to do do your bed exercises given by PT in hospital , foor pumps and ankle rotations ...

you were hit by a bus !!!   have you watched the THR surgery on you tube ? not for the weak of stomach , however there is an animated version -

pain will inhabit movement at times - that is why most doctors want you to stay ahead of the pain and take them as prescribed .. use your walking aids for now - go slowly, darling ...

    big warm hug

    renee

You know what...you are right...i do need to rest..ive gotten plenty of sleep but not so much rest. Ive been pushing myself since surgery because i didnt want my hip to tighten up on me...so when i wasnt sleep i was up walking on my walker...doing the exercises they gave me in the hospital but now i was doing the exercise the PT gave me so i can practice when he's not here..if i push to much..i'll have a greater chance of re-injuring it again...so thanks renee you are right..today i think i will relax on this beautiful saturday

    Yes, yes. yes, yes

eat, do isometrics to build muscle tone, take the pain pill before physical therapy. PT is hard work!

Work hard. Rest hard. And ice. Then ice some more.

    You are right on schedule!

    hugs

I was told to think about investing in an ice maker. What are your thoughts on that..since everyone says ice ice ice should i get an ice machine or is it not worth it

nope, nix rhe ice machine....get gel packs...no leak, freeze quickly, hold cold longer, no pointy ice cubes, nice a flat and foldable

Hi,Please remember that you have had a major op.It can take up to a year to get back to normal. It is better to take pain relief, than nothing at all.Do you have any help re you're recovery,as this is very important. If you rush things you will have a huge set back.Keep going with your excerise, & you will become stronger. Please rest as much as you can.Happy Christmas ! Regards Amanda

I'm now 9 days after my Right THR and have my first PT session tomorrow morning.  All this advice has been helpful, at least at managing expectations.
