Ongoing Groin Strain or Herina or ???

Hello, please can someone help because this is driving me insane!

I’m a 34-year-old male and slightly overweight with maybe not the best diet in the world.

For quite a while now (18 months or so) I’ve been having a sensation that there is some kind of 'lump' on my lower right abdomen, it isn’t painful at all, but I’m regularly aware its there.  It seems much more noticeable if I wear a belt and am sitting down, I assume the pressure of the belt on my stomach makes it more obvious or something.  Same thing if I squat down or sit on the sofa with my legs up so my belly is under a little pressure.

Its also quite uncomfortable when I press the spot where the 'lump sensation is' i.e if my daughters are climbing over me etc.

About 18 months ago while playing sport I had what I thought was a groin strain, I could carry on playing but it was pretty uncomfortable!  I've been getting pain from this on and off since, I would have thought a normal groin strain would have cleared itself up by now as I’ve not really been doing anything active since.

Please excuse the slight graphic nature of the next bit!!  With regards to toilet habits, I’ve generally always been on the looser side, however when they are more solid they seem a bit squashed – I think this is ribbon stools?

I went to the doctors who’s only answer for everything seems to be the fact I’m overweight and seems disinterested in listening to any other symptoms.  He had a little prod around of my abdomen but didn’t find any lumps.  I said to him at the time as he prodded I could almost feel the ‘lump’ sensation move as he applied pressure.  He also did do a ‘back passage’ inspection and said it was fine.  So yea, I just got sent away with him saying ‘ I just think that’s the way you are, lose weight and I’m sure it will be ok’.  Well that’s fine, but it wasn’t like it in the past – so how can it be ‘the way I am’???

I’m SURE there is something there, and reading the web etc, I think its quite possible it’s a hernia but feel pretty frustrated he wont send me for a scan or whatever?

Anyone got any ideas? Please help!!!

Oh sorry, also forgot to mention I quite often get bloated now and burp quite a bit.  I do also break wind but I know this sounds weird, but I really have to push it out – this certainly wasn’t like that before.

Yes, as my answer below to you. Stress also plays a big part in the digestive system and if you have IBS which I am quiite sure that you do. Then stress will make it worse. The wind bit, it is really awful when you know that you are so bloated with wind and cannot pass it. I have been told that it is because of the imbalance of intestinal flora in the gut that makes the food ferment and that is what causes he gas and because you are bloated the gas gets trapped in the small intestine. The pains at times are actually worse than childbirth when it gets real bad. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in th gut so it needs to be starved of the things that cause us to have a high PH reading in the gut. Hope this helps. I do know it all but sometimes break out and suffer immensly.

Keep going back to this dr. And start demanding an MRI it will show up better than an X-ray.  I've done my fighting over so many things, doctors now a days are useless, I don't know why they actually become doctors at all, because they certainly don't care to listen or help anyone except to throw pills at you which only mask the problem and create an even bigger problem that a person ends up in the hospital due to doctor negligence. Just keep arguing and fighting you know your body the same as doctors k

now theirs.  Ask this doctor if this gets worse are you going to put me in the hospital? Then see what they say

    That is Doctors

all over. I am older and have had a problem all my life, since birth with diet and constioation. Finally after 4 gastroenterologists here wher I live went to see a professor in Sydney and she told me strait awy that i had was Irritable syndrome. it is caused by food intolerance and  she put me on what is calledthe FODMAP diet. It is helping but it takes a very strick diet. if you give in and break the diet it is like starting from scratch. What happens is that the natural flora in the intestines become unbalanced and you have to find out what foods you are intolerant to. I don't know where you come from or what diagnostic tools they have for diagnosis but in Australia they are very limited, so if you can get to a goodclinisc that does diagnostics it would nbe wise. I am finding that bread affects me as does dairy. I have suffered from constipation all my life. The fruit that i can consume is very limited because of the sugars that they contain, namely fructose. it is a very hard thing to get one'shead around but if you try to findout what i have suggested it may help. I too have the lump in the side and have had myappendics and gallbladder out and no help. The lump apparently is faecestrapped in the narrowest part of the bowel and when you say ribbon stools that is a dead give away for the IBS. Hope this helps, let me know.

    Hi Gary

I can't offer much help beyond repeating what has been said elsewhere. A scan will tell if there is a hernia. My doc told me i had a groin strain unti the lump appeared one day and the resultant scan confirmed an iguinal hernia.

I don't see any stats on your height, weight and what you did to think you may have a hernia!

I have a naval hernia and it looks worse than it is. My GF calls it the Budda Button and rubs it some times.lol

Reality is that it doesn't hurt and it doesn't cause any pain or poblems.

I personally have taken a proactive approach to this by loosing weight and strengthening my core muscles. I want to remove as much stress from the area as possible. First, look at how many pounds you are over your ideal weight and then figure out a plan to get close to your upper weight. Don't run to meds until you have tried to get yourself healthy naturally. If you have a groin type of hernia you would know it, my younger brother had one of those and it was very painful.

    Hope you feel better soon!

    Hi there.

I have undergone numerous scans, tests and physical examinations.

my r groin is swollen and extremely painful, ive been in and out of hospital for the past 11 months and although on physical examination every dr ive seen asumes I have an inguinal or femoral hernia. None of the scans have picked anything up, despite my swelling lump thing in groin. Its visible to see and feel.

I would if I were you seek a second opinion.

my symtoms are painful when touched and when lifting or sitting possition and also coughing or straining.

they can be dangerous thats why I dont understand why they arent more thorough.

    Good luck.

Sounds  to me that you have irritable bowel syndrome. I have had it for years and the Drs didn't have a clue. Ended up going to a gastroenterologist professor who detected it straight away. You may have just twisted the wrong way and that caused it to flare up. The bowel motion is what gave it away. Onehas to follow what is calleda low fodmap diet and see what you are intolerant to. That is what causes IBS. Certain food intolerances. I was told initially to go off all dairy and sugar. Bit hard to do but takes about 3 months to see an improvement in the situation. If you break the diet in that time it has to start all over again from the beginning. I was also put on Inner health plus for the acidic reaction that i get. You didn't mention whether you get reflux or heartburn. i suffer greatly from heartburn. Stooping or bending or as you say a belt caused pressure on the bowel. Hop this helps. Can you please replu if you get any help from it. Or ask to see a GOOD gastroenterologist.
