Ongoing Kidney Infection Symptoms followed by new symptoms

I have had quite a few KI(kidney infections)in my life and my last one was pretty stubborn to go away. This time, my first symptom(cloudy urine that smelled like a porta-potty)started about 3 weeks before Mothers Day this year. I was unsure of what was going on bc I had never experienced these symptoms before. And..,,,,then the flank pain hit and I knew!! I was treated with something I can't remember (light and dark green capsule that smells horrible). Symptoms were relieved for about 2.5 weeks and then the urine odor comes back and my urine is dark "orangish" but I drink half my weight (converted to ounces) in h2o everyday! We were leaving the next day for vacation and I couldn't get into the doctor(I'm not keen on going to the doctor anyways unless I am in horrible pain like most of my KIs). Day 2 into vacation I wake up with the throbbing pain in my back and just couldn't stay comfortable. I tried to do an evisit but they wouldn't treat a KI online 😏  So I roughed it out somehow. Late July, I still have urine odor, but no pain, but now comes.....the dreaded "vaginal odor"!!!! I have never experienced this and am quite embarrassed by it. Is this related? Then, around late August, I started getting nauseous and vomiting pretty much daily, mainly in the mornings to mid afternoon (no! I'm not prego! Had that "fixed" already). I drink too much h2o at once, I puke. I cough, I puke. But most importantly, I'm just nauseous!! I do drink a fair amount of alcohol  but always try to get enough h2o in me daily. Also, as of Sunday, when I wipe after urinating, I keep thinking I'm in my period, which isn't due anytime soon, but because there is pinkish reddish coloring on the toilet paper. Anyone have any ideas?

Take Care of the kidney infection with meds. Finish taking all the meds if you still don't feel better. You have to go to your Doctor again and get that checked out. Your health is important don't ignore the pain.💕🙌

I get light pink spotting before my period. Maybe you're about to get your period. Maybe it came early. Sometimes mine would come a week earlier than it should. Hope you feel better💖🙏

Sorry that you're having these difficulties.  Are you seeing a urologist, or just a GP? Is your doctor telling you what kind of bacteria is being cultured from these infections, or is he doing cultures at all? What type of bacteria you have governs the antibiotics you're prescribed and for how long they're given.  You should also be re-tested at the end of the antibiotics to make sure the infection has been cleared.  You seem to be getting lots of infections that could be caused by inadequate medication of resistant bacteria.  People can develop "biofilms" that allow bacteria to cling together and resist the action of the antibiotics. The blood in your urine needs to be checked out.

People have a balance of "good" and "bad" bacteria in their bodies and in each system.  Enough "good" bacteria will keep the "bad" bacteria from over colonizing.  If you are not taking a women's probiotic, that provides beneficial bacteria daily, especially while you're taking antibiotics, the antibiotics reduce the presence of both types of bacteria, and the "bad" bacteria tends to overgrow again.  So, you end up with repeat infections and bacterial vaginosis. If you decide to get a probiotic, remember to get one that won't dissolve in your stomach.  If it does, it's useless.

Now on to the alcohol.  No matter how much water you drink, you're not doing your body any favors.  It's already dealing with a chronic infection which impacts the performance of every organ in your body, especially your kidneys and liver that have to de-tox your body every day. You didn't say how much you drink so I don't know what a "fair" amount is. I lost a family member at 52 from chronic alcoholism.

I am concerned for you and your overall health and longevity.  Those who love you need you!  Best of luck! xx

Thanks for the reply! I will get back into the doctor asap! Do you the the vaginal odor is associated? I am interpreting that it is by your comment.

Yes it is.  Lots of doctors will tell you that each bacterial system, that is your digestive system, including your intestines, your urinary tract and reproductive system, i.e. your vagina are all separate.  But that's not what cutting edge research is revealing.  Every person has a bacterial balance that helps each system/body function correctly.  That's where the probiotics come in.

After a while, some doctors practice by "rote" what they learned initially in med school, and don't keep current.  They learn little or nothing about nutrition, and want it all to be easy. (For instance, they'll say that probiotics offer little or no help.) Give a patient a pill or cream to cure them.  If the patient isn't helped--they don't look further and label the patient as a "problem."

And, they don't want an intelligent patient, who asks "why" and "how." They'll tell you, don't get on line because you'll scare yourself to death, but if they aren't willing to tell you what they think is going on in correct terminology, how are you supposed to know?  For instance, over prescribing the wrong anti-biotic and not checking whether any prescribed antibiotic has worked will mess up the bacterial system so important for your body to function. I think most women are sensible enough not to scare themselves to death, but to look for knowledge.

Please let me know how you get on!

So, should I ask for a probiotic when I go. I'm sure they will give me abx. I've had trouble in the past with abx working. I have had most success with Levaquin so I might request that. Or if I ask for a culture, will it show what strain it is this giving more insight into what abx should be administered? I haven't had flank pain since the 4th of July, which was bad and accompanied with fever, chills and vomiting. But, all the other sx are still present. Also, what brand of probiotic do you recommend; you had mentioned the type that doesn't digest in the stomach but rather in the intestines? And one more thing, should I be taking probiotics routinely, even after this clears up?

Thanks for all of your helpful advice and friendly knowledge!!

You should select your own probiotic.  There are probiotics that are recommended to be taken with antibiotics and there are antibiotics that are recommended for female and bladder health.  You can google to find them.  I don't think we are permitted here to name brands.   I continue to take probiotics when I don't have an infection.  One probiotic that I take has greatly improved my digestive health.

Your case surprises me because you do not have any pain, burning, or urgency for the last two+ months.  I guess one can have a UTI without those symptoms, but it is less common.

If you go to a good doctor, they should take a urine sample and send it to the lab.  The lab will find which bacteria is in the urine and run a test to see which antibiotics are sensitive to that bacteria.

I think your female odor is possibility unrelated to the other things.  I'd probably first get the kidney problem addressed and then see an obgyn about the other problem if it still exists.

With the amount of water you are drinking, you should not have dark orange urine.

What is the status of your health otherwise?  Do you have type 2 diabetes or anything that affects the kidneys.

The nausea and vomiting could be related to the other problems but maybe not.  I think you need a good all over physical with blood work.

Hi there!  Marilee's answer was right on.  But I do believe that a lack of bacterial balance in your vagina can be caused by over-use of antibiotics.  And, yes, you should take probiotics all the time. You can research which survive the acid in the stomach on line.
