Open Myomectomy

Hello all, I'm new to here and hoping to get some much needed advise.
I had a open myomectomy 4 weeks ago like a c section. I was scheduled for a laparscopically however my fibroid remained at 9cm so had to be open.
My problem is I have a lot of pain on the right side of my scar (underneath the scar and above the scar around 2 inches above.. My right thigh has reduced feeling down to my knee and round my right cheek right into the anus.. (Sorry about that) I was admitted back into hospital after being discharged from the original op as my GP said I shouldn't be in so much pain..
The hospital decided after a week of having me ghat I have marelgia parasthetica.. Not sure if that is spelt right.. Left side of would is feeling in good shape but right side has been a issue since I came out of operation. If I press about an inch and a half above the scar line from left to right there isn't really any pain from left to right until I get to just over half way across then pain is about a 7-10 depending on pain relieve levels at the time.. Can anyone shed any light and also I'm getting the feeling that my groin area has an elastic band bulling on it, I keep thinking my knicker elastic is digging in but it's not, after I adjust then it's still there and my knickers are not tightly fitted and I'm Waring look clothes due to my scar being so painful. I'm really tired of feeling like I've not progressed as I should have after surgery. Any thoughts would be great fully received. Many Thanks

Hi Sugarplumsilver,
I'm so sorry for your complications. I highly suggest you get a second opinion accompanied with an ultrasound or other diagnostic testing. While anytime you have incisions like that they take awhile to heal, the pain staying located to one side sounds concerning. Are you having fevers, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea? My best wishes to you, please keep me posted on your progress.

Hi Jessicadower,
Thank you for your reply. When I was read mitred I had an ultrasound which they say showed no collection of blood or infection, however I do worry this may not have been entirely correct as I passed urine 10 minutes before as I couldn't hold onto it any longer due to the pain. While in hospital they also took bloods which all came back fine except my white blood cells were on the low side and urine was sent to the lab that came back with ecoli, the UTI has been treated and I was retested this week and told it has now resolved, however still got cloudy, smelly urine.
I have been on the internet this morning to try and understand what organs are sat behind my pain and it seems to be in the region of the appendix and the star of the bowl, I am wondering if they are located a little further up as the pain is at the same level as the top of the hip bone towards the scar. Do you think the ultrasound would show everything up correctly with me not having a full bladder? I visited my GP again yesterday as my lips and hands started swelling so he told me to stop the antibiotics as the second Urine test has come back clear and the gabapentin to stop also as I'm allergic to one of them so he gave me a prescription for new nerve pain tablet. He was very annoyed and said I should be like this and I should as my surgeon "what went wrong on the operating table" I was quite shocked he went on to say.. " I didn't say that" I'm not too sure how to take the whole situation now. Please advise what your thoughts are.

Dear Sugarplum,
If the bladder was not full the ultrasound d can miss small things because they require the fluid to create the picture. Large abnormalities would be seen regardless. If you had an Ecoli infection causing a UTI but did not take the full course of antibiotics it can travel. Stopping antibiotics all together is never sound advice, the doctor should have changed what you were taking.
It is extremely frustrating as women because most doctors don't take our pain and discomfort in that area too seriously. I would suggest that you drink large amounts of cranberry juice over the course of next week, see if that helps to clear up your urine. As to the rest of your pain I will also do some research for you and let you know what I find.
Hang in there, working together this can get solved sooner than later.

Hello Jess,
Thank you for getting back to me. I will get some cranberry juice today.
I did think the same as you as to stopping the antibiotics, however the GP decided as I had swelling and the new urine test came back clear to stop them. He did said that you should really finish the course but my lips were getting bigger. I'm trying to get out and about with my family as I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for myself now lol.. And I don't want to get depressed too.. So I've had to go back onto the oral Morphine as if I don't move around too much I'm ok it's only sore to touch the area but if I am to walk a distance say further than 50 steps it's really, really painful.. I've just got a horrible feeling somethings not right and the reaction of my GP has now worried me further. Thank you for doing a bit of research for me. Many Thanks Kelli x

Hi Kelli,
After extensive research I found that the problem in your leg is side effect of the type of surgery you had. Studies showed that the nerve is located close to the surgical site and numerous different factors could play a part in it.
If the surgeon used a turnicate to clamp the artery to reduce blood loss he may have damaged the nerve due to the close proximity. You could have scar tissue that has adhered to the nerve pulling and compressing it. Remaining swelling at the surgical site and of the uterus my be compressing it. Or very rarely the lower intestine may have looped around it. All of these are treatable concerns though. If it is scar tissue or the intestine further surgery may be required. If it is any of the other items though proper pain management and a specialized exercise routine may correct the problem in 12 to 18 weeks. All surgeons are expected to cover this possible complication prior to surgery. I did further research on recovery time from your proceedure as well. While the average is 6 to 8 weeks, 32% of women may need as much as 8 months to fully heal. The first 2 weeks minimal movement is recommended. During weeks 3 and 4 you should try to walk 10 minutes each day. Weeks 5 and 6 you should be able to walk and stand for 30 to 60 minutes. However, if the pain is not subsiding or is getting worse all studies stated that immediate medical attention is required. With the swelling and scar tissue an ultrasound d is not the best choice, but rather a CT or MRI of the lower abdomen and pelvic region will provide the best diagnostic for you. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing so much pain, that doesn't sound right, but getting answers is very hard. I think surgeons are so litigation conscious they don't want to admit anything has gone wrong, but that's hardly helping you, you just want it put right! Your pain may be 'referred' so doesn't necessarily come from where you think, when I had a degenerating Fibroid the pain centre moved all the time.
it could be adhesions when you were stitched up, my partner has had Persistent shooting pains around his appendix scar for several years now, but no one wants to do anything about it, he had staples instead of stitches and it was a real botch job, the wound took a long while to heal.
Hope you find some answers soon x
