Open Operation

Hi!

I have a 11cm cyst which is fluid filled and has a soild part. I have had a ultra sound, ct and MRI scan.

I had a call  from the consultant and he had to go to a diffrent hosptail for the cancer team to look at my case for the 2nd time and they  are all struggling to say weather or not it's suspicious ether way. So they can't do keyhole surgery.

So means it will be open and they will be taking ovary too.

He is booking me an  appointment to see Him in about 3 weeks time to talk about it all and with any questions I have.

He said the cancer team  are resured that all my bloods are normal, the rest of my pelvis, tummy and all organs are fine too.

He said if there was any pre cancerous cells by removing the ovary they would be removing the cells/ cancer from my body by doing that.

Has anyone had there cyst and ovary removed?? I'm only 23 and I'm so worried.

How long is recovery from this kind of surgary?

Will I need help once home?

How much  physically will I be able to do myself?

Will I have to stay in hosptail?

Would be greatful for people's experiences with this op before , during and after please

I had keyhole surgery but I would imagine the recovery time is the same as a cesarean .Can't they do a biopsy first?

What is the recovery time for a caesarean??

And no they can't as it's mostly fluid filled and solid part. The cancer team has told them to d

To do open surgary rather than keyhole x

I don't know. I would imagine a several weeks since they're cutting your skin, tissue and muscles to get into the uterus area. I had the keyhole and was healed completely within 6 weeks. I wore plastic around my waist and hips while taking a shower so that the stitches wouldn't open.

I had open surgery for a 20cm ‘suspicious’ cyst attached to one of my ovaries so they took the cyst/ovary out. Was in hospital for 3 nights and off work for 4 weeks. Recovery wasn’t as bad as I was expecting from that surgery but I had a full hysterectomy a couple of months after the biopsy showed I had a borderline tumour. That’s more invasive so was longer to recover (6 weeks off work)...advice is to make sure there’s someone at home to help when you do get out of hospital and take your time, listen to your body...

hope all goes ok for you, I know it’s tough not knowing...

I can't tell or not if mine is suspicious or not from my scans not even cancer team can tell which I'm surprised about.

I've researched the op and says recovery time is 6-8 weeks is this right?

Pain wise how much pain were you in?

So I should expect to stay in for around 3 nights then?  Do I really need someone at home and what will I be able to do afterward and what will I not be able to do?

It's just so scary as I don't know if it's cancerous Or not x

Everyone is different in terms of recovery but I think if you’re young fit and otherwise healthy this will help? I was given a few painkillers when I came home including codeine, but that made me very constipated. I only needed them for about 5 days then managed without as I hate taking pills.

The help you need when you get home will be because bending up and down and lifting is hard and painful. You won’t realise how much you do these things until it matters - loading a washing machine, lifting pots and pans, washing your hair in the shower, getting up and off a seat, out of bed. Walking is a great way to build yourself back up though so suggest getting out for short walks.

Hi Holly, I just had both ovary's removed and 2 cysts that were on my right side. I was in the hospital 2 nights...yes, you will need someone with you the first couple of nights home as it's hard to get in and out of bed or sit up. Stairs were no problem. You cannot lift anything for 6-8 weeks - I cheated cause I thought I was fine and it set me right back so my advice is don't do it.  The first week for me was "rough"! Very painful, need to take med's they give you, don't let the pain get away from you. I'm not working right now but if I was I think I would have needed 6 weeks off for sure. The 2nd month was hard as well but each week got  better and better. I'm at the 3 month mark now and doing good. Still can't exercise alot other than walking. If you are only having 1 ovary removed, it should be much better than I went thru. Totally worth it though, I feel so much better!! Get a body pillow (walmart have them)  - this saved me! I found I needed to elevate my feet because you have to lie on your back. I couldn't sleep on my side for at least 6 weeks but again, I had both sides done so it may be different for you.

      Hey,

Thanks for your reply. Do you mind me asking how old you are and what kind of cysts you had? Mine are fluid and soild filled.

So I thought I might of been ok at home by myself. Maybe not then.

I'm glad you are doing good! I'm super scared about the op.

I'm worried it will come back as cancer- all cancer bloods including CA125 are normal and all organs, pelvis and tummy are normal which the cancer team are resured about so I'm guessing that's good?

So looks like I will need to rest lots then.  I'm seeing my consultant surgon in about 3 weeks to talk it all through better as he said it's better to talk face to face rather than phone plus any questions I have.

      Xx

      Hi Holly,

I’m 52 and my cysts were the same.

I too was worried and totally freaked out about the surgery but I have to tell you that was the easy part! Don’t worry about a thing, it will go smoothly. It’s actually a very routine surgery.

I would worry more about the post surgery making sure you have everything for a smooth recovery IE

      - body pillow and lots of other pillows to prop you up in bed

      - buy senator laxatives (the stool softener kind) you will need them! Someone else gave me that tip and thank god they did because you won’t be able to run out and buy them. You are really not mobile the first week

      - I also bought some prune juice

      - stock up on groceries. I wasn’t nauseated but got lots of soups, toasts etc things that were easy to prepare for people helping me

      - reading material (but no big hardcover books - I could not hold them up!) lots of magazines!

      - hydrogen peroxide- you can clean your incision with this after the first little while

      Hope that helps!

      Hey,

Why did they choose to do yours open surgary? They doing mine open as my scans are not clear enough for them to say keyhole is safe enough.

I worry that something may go wrong.

Thank you for your advice. So it's pretty much a 2 month recovery time.

What were your soild parts ?

They did open surgery vs keyhole because the size of my cysts - he said  it could have rupture when removing it. Safer for my situation.

No, my C125 test was negative. They still send samples off to the lab after the surgery to double check though.

My CA125 has came back normal as well as other tumor markers blood tests

The consultant said to me yesterday that the cancer team are resured that all my bloods are normal and are resured that my pelvis area, tummy and organs are all ok too which I'm guessing is a good thing?

But what I can't understand is why out of 3 scans they don't show enough detail x
