Open surgery - Experience under local anaesthetic only?

Posted , 1 user is following.

I have a surgery booked for inguinal hernia repair in 3 weeks

I would like to know if any of you have experienced going through a hernia operation under local anaesthetic only, how you found the procedure emotionally and physically?

I am thinking about going for local anaesthetic only, as I have CFS/M.E. and have heard that general anaesthetic can cause people with M.E to relapse. I just about manage to hold full time work and have a child and i want the best chance of recovery so that my wife doesn't have to hold the fort for too long.

I must admit I have a bit of anxiety about the procedure and if there weren't complications with CFS, i would be choosing general anaesthetic straight out. I'm freaking out a bit about the idea of seeing someone cutting in to me, feeling anything and having to experience that for an hour.

I would also rather local than regional as i want less risk of nerve damage and don't like the idea of not being able to feel most of my body.

Please be honest with your experience, i need to weight this up and if i think it's not worth the trauma, i will prob have to go for general.

Thanks in advance.
