Open wound

Hi all
I'm getting a THR right hip on Thursday, which I really can't wait.
I have a fear that it will be cancelled as I have a open wound.
I had a hernia repair back in August and this is still healing.
I showed the nurse at my pre assessment and she swabbed it to see if there was any infection which thankfully there isn't.
I had to see my general surgeon who done my hernia,
And he said it was doubtful it would get done and be prepared to be sent home.
Be thankful for any advice. Xx

Hi Sharon
If they saw it at pre op and didn't say anything about it being a problem I should think it'll be ok.
If you are unlucky to have it cancelled then you will be given a date soon after it heals enough I'm sure.
Hope it does go ahead as planned. Keep us informed

Is it worth contacting your surgeons secretary, explain your concern and let them decide?
It would feel terrible if you went to the hospital on your scheduled date and then they sent you home
Good luck xx

Thank you Sandra for your reply.
The nurse said if it's infected it would be cancelled and rebooked, I had to wait 3 days, if i didnt hear anything all was fine which i never heard.
It's just my general surgeon has got me so worried with what he said.
I have now been house bound for 3 weeks with pain so bad I'm more scared of it being cancelled than I am of the operation. Xx

As the nurse connected with the Orthopaedic team said this I would be hoping it's ok.
I arrived at mine at 7.30am to be told I was 2nd on list. At 10 am I was taken to bay and changed into gown etc. They eventually came for me at 3pm !!! 1st person had been in surgery all that time as there were complications. Everyone after me was sent home so I was lucky.
Suppose point is that anything can cause cancellation although majority go ahead as planned.
Not sure if happens in all hospitals but a few were cancelled that I overheard and we're told to come back next day and they would be earlier on list.
Keeping fingers crossed for you. I was so excited about having it done and only concern was it being cancelled like you.
See you on the oghrr side and good luck

I understand completely Sharon
My operation was supposed to be on July 18th, it was cancelled at 6pm on July 17th.,.so disappointing and frustrating
This time (September 20th)I was scared right up until I went down for surgery that it would be cancelled again!
I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Let us know how you get on 😊 xx

Hi Sharon, It's Tuesday now, and you haven't heard so it all sounds good! After one cancellation, even when I was in the anaesthetic room and they were struggling to do the spinal I thought they would say 'get your coat' 9 days ago. I know that desperation to be out of horrific pain, and you will be soon. Yes, it's pain - but a different sort of pain that you know won't last and will lead to the life you should be having now! Good luck, keep us posted!

Thank you Renee.
I'm praying it's not going to be cancelled but it's now down to assessment by the surgeon.
Hopefully I will be getting back on here from the other side!

I thought at first it was going to go ahead. Seen all that I had to see apart from the most important one so was getting really excited! Then my surgeon came in, asked to look at wound , stood up and then said, no new hip for you today! I was devastated!
Got a call from his secretary today and now rescheduled for 30th November!

Oh Sharon
I am sorry it didn't go ahead, but the main reason was for your health & safety. The last thing you would want is to get an infection in your new hip !!!!
Your new date will come around soon enough.

Oh No Sharon, how terrible for you, especially as you were so close! I think the disappointment is the realisation that your pain is still your constant companion rather than the wait. As my first date was cancelled I really felt that I wouldn't be able to cope, but I did. I went back to work, even though I didn't want to and I think the companionship from my colleagues while I was there, and my lovely family at home kept me going. I think the trick is to absolutely take strong painkillers regularly, ( or get stronger ones if you need them!) and do the absolute physical minimum to get by. Eat well, get plenty of rest and use the time to source your post op books / films / entertainment / chocolate?! , so you will have things to come back to. I did tell myself I would re - learn crochet so that I could make the little octopi they have in the baby units, but still to make a start on that one ? At least now you are amongst friends who know exactly how you feel and can support you on your onward journey.!
