open wound after hemorrhoidectomy

Hello All,

I had a hemorrhoidectomy 5 weeks ago. This has been the most painful, challenging thing I have ever gone through. It has completely changed me as a person. I am completely depressed and anxious all the time. I am healing, but during my first BM I blew open one of my incisions. I had a giant, gaping open wound. it has gotten much smaller, but just when it starts to feel better, I have to poop again and it opens back up. Has anyone else experienced this? My Dr. will not give me a time frame for how long I will feel like this. I am desperate for my normal life back, or just to hear something positive. any words would be appreciated.

Hi, I am 11 am days post op from thd procedure for internal hemorrhoids and hemorrhoidectomy for external. It's been horendous! I'm doing anything to keep from getting constipated..currently Miralax and Colace...the pain when I have a bm is awful. I actually popped a stitch the second day post op so it looks like I have a gaping wound and the surgeons office doesn't seem concerned. Just keep it clean...ya! no kidding. The swelling is awful to so much that it throbs into my vagina...sorry for the graphics but has any other woman experienced this? Sometimes its worse than the surgery site. I hope this gets better.

hi.. I just had surgery yesterday. I was given tramadol, Ibuprofen, lactulouse and antibiotics metronidazole.. these are good to take to help with any infection, im surprised so many people didn't get given anything..

I think my hemhoroids look like they are still slightly hanging out.. mine were meant to be all removed but it looks a mess.. im day 2 and not gone to the toilet yet, but not hardly eaten as im scared of the pain so just drinking lots of water and laxatives.. I hope everyone heals well as quickly as possible.

im going to get some Epsom salts as mentioned in this group..I have some annusol cream which I might try for now whilst I order some ointment that I have seen mentioned. thanks everyone.. big hugs.. kaz

I had colorectal surgery on July 1, 2021 for fissure (injection of Botox) and hemorrhoidectomy to remove internal and external hemorrhoids. Thankfully, I have a sister who is a nurse and she has helped me both initially after surgery and when two of the "dissolvable" sutures came out of me that had to be cut. I followed all post op instructions with a minimum of 3 baths a day, minimal use of oxycodone as it can cause constipation and I doubled up my use of Colace until post-op week 3. In my opinion, this is a very painful surgery and I completely underestimated it, though I was not given another option such as banding. I have not yet been in for follow-up so I am not sure what is going on, but the girl who has been waxing me for 2 years now says everything looks the same as pre-surgery, so I think the external hemorrhoids have reoccurred. I am over 4 weeks out now and STILL NOT HEALED, which is my biggest concern. I still wear diapers (much easier and more comfortable than pads) because there is still discharge and occasionally blood, especially after BMs, which were initially super painful, but now not so much. I called my doctor's office 2 weeks ago and told them I thought I may have been having post-op complications, but was assured everything sounded normal...right down to loose sutures. I don't know what is going on, but I will NEVER agree to this surgery again! I will avoid it at all costs and advise anyone thinking about it to do the same. I am concerned as to why I am not back to normal after 4 weeks yet. I sympathize with anyone going through this.

I had a hemorrhoidectomy on the 16th & they put 2 stitches in. bleeding had mainly stopped the following day but I had my first bowel movement today and it was excruciating & bled alot. I'm worried I may have busted a stitch & am afraid of my next bowel movement. I have started taking stool softner so hopefully that helps. I'm unable to do warm baths to help it but I have been cleaning the area with anusol wipes & putting lidocain cream on.

So without being too graphic I had a golf ball size hemorrhoid that was giving me so much pain that I had to go to ER and have emergency surgery. I knew the surgeon who had done surgery on a couple of my doctor friends, so I felt safe in his hands. He told me that this is one of the most painful surgeries there are much more painful then my two cancer surgeries. I had to go to the ER, 8 years ago and have a hemorrhoid cut into to release 40 bloodclots and that was painful, but this is 10X worse!!! The surgeon gave me hardcore pain pills but said they probably would not help and they did not! My one doctor friend called in stronger pain pills and they did not help, so he actually came to my house to inject me with something that helped a little bit, but not much. I had some prescription lidocaine to put on the area to deaden it and that did nothing as well. So the first two weeks were pure hell and the only thing they said that might help some is sitz baths, so I tried them and not much relief. After two weeks I gave up on the drugs, which did nothing and I hate as well and I started detoxing which was horrible! So I am now starting week 6 and I am still in pain and can not do too much but lay around with a heating pad. This is extremely depressing, but I try and meditate and look at the positives like I can see, have food, shelter, etc...!

My "journey" and story with haemorrhoids. I have had two haemorrhoidectomies with two different experiences of recovery and healing. First surgery was in the summer 2020. The surgeon removed, as he described, one massive haemorrhoid. It used to prolapse after every BM, and was very painful & bleeding and had to be pushed back to rectum after BM. So I was happy to have a surgery for it as I've suffered from them for approx 10-15 years.

Recovery for that was very very painful as described by most of us here. BMs were terribly painful for the first two weeks but after that the healing started to improve. Approx one month, I was able to ride my first bicycle ride, which is telling. So, all in all, was quite happy how the surgery and the recovery went (even though the pain during and after the BMs were just horrendous for the first 2 weeks). And I couldn't sleep properly for some time because of the pain. On top of that my cannula was injected very poorly and the needle broke a vein in my hand and caused the anaesthesia drug to go "all over". My hand swell a lot and was very painful the first month or two. My hand fully recovered after one year; it was crazy that it took longer to recover from it than from the surgery itself.

I would describe the 1st surgery a success after all, so I decided to book another haemorrhoidectomy for Feb '22. This was to remove the rest what was left from the 1st surgery. The 2nd surgery was less invasive than the first one, but recovery has been different and not so good. I have had much less pain than from the 1st surgery but this time the location of the wound is different and more problematic. It is in the exterior sphincter, so during BM it is under stress, causing it to open. So I still have an open wound 5 weeks after surgery, which worries me and causes pain, pus and a bit of bleeding. There's been no real healing for the wound for the last 3 weeks I would say.

A tip if constipated (I was three days after the 1st surgery). The laxatives that doctors describe help to soften the stool but are really not super effective (when taken the doses recommended). If you want to flush your system completely, you might consider a 'salt water flush' (just google it). At your own risk as I am not medically trained, but it helped me a lot. They are called top to down enemas. Do not use table salt, but Himalayan salt or sea salt. Most effective is Epsom salt. The drink tastes horrible but it flushes out everything.

I pray & hope progress in your recovery process for all of you, pain really cripples! And that comes from someone who is not religious...

Well, I had my surgery on March 8. the surgeon told my husband they were quite impressive (whatever that means). I had both internal and external removed. It's been tough but I think I'm doing OK. I still can't sit up for too long. I go to my 2nd post-op Tuesday.

I have found the key to "staying loose" is lots of water, miralax and Metamucil.

My biggest complaints are gas and the raw skin in-between my cheeks. My cheeks haven't touched in a few decades due to my external hemorrhoids. Now they are together and it seems the moisture has cause a rash and irritatation. Anyone else had the rash issue and lived to tell about it? 🤣

Ok so this was years ago and im hoping any of you can give me feedback on where youre at now and what happened?? because im almost 4 months post op and am not healed. when i look down there, i can pull it back a little and still see raw blood tinted flesh so i dont think the wound healed properly and its still very painful to have a BM. Its also like its super tight??

What do i do?? My surgeon is an idiot and the healthcare in the states is bogus so i dont even want to go back. She was very condescending 😕
