Operated leg a little longer ?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 8 days thr and doing really well, I am on one crutch , virtually no painkillers and can get around a fair bit indoors without crutch , I have at least 50 stairs to go up and down several times a day and managing well . I have started to go out walking for 5/10 mins per day , so all positive BUT I feel my operated leg is slightly longer than the non operated . It is still quite swollen so I'm hoping when this goes down they might be a bit more equal? Has any one else found this? Also if this is the case can I still wear flip flops and wedges etc when I'm ready to ?

    HI Sandy

Nice to have you here! At only 8 days out from surgery. Swelling is normal during this this time. It takes time for our bodies to heal.I would ask my orthopedic surgeon about the leg length discrepancy.

    Hi Sandy.

You are doing really well.  I am almost 6 weeks post posterior THR and felt the same as you at your stage, that is, the operated leg felt longer and was very swollen, in fact was black, blue, purple and yellow too!

I saw my surgeon last Tuesday, and I do have a +1cm difference.  He prescribed a visit to a podiatrist to have an 8 mm insole made for my left shoe, apparently it's up to me when, or if, I wear it - it depends on whether the difference causes other problems.  Of course an inner sole cannot be worn with flip-flops or flimsy sandals; I live in South-West France, and these are my usual footwear in the hot summer!

I still have a little swelling and haven't yet worn my jeans, as I find them just a little too tight and uncomfortable on the scar - but it should be shorts weather soon!

    Good luck.
