Reposting without the info link, which is under admin review:

HSV-1 is the main cause of oral herpes, which apparently recurs in 25% of infected individuals. So, a person may have a cold sore(s) as a child, but then never again, or only mild recurrences that may be mistaken for other things. HSV-2 barely ever causes oral herpes.

Hi, according to most websites (in Australia) approx 85% of people have hsv1. The majority of them never having an outbreak. Hsv1 is a lot more minor than 2 so it reoccurences are less common. Hsv2 is rare on the mouth but when it is there, reoccurences are more likely than hsv1 on the mouth.

Basically pretty much everyone has hsv1 even if they havnt has a coldsore before

Actually, oral HSV-2 is extremely rare (nearly 100% of all infections are genital!), and if it does occur, rarely ever does it present as an outbreak, so it is not more common in either regard.

While oral HSV-1 is considered very common, increased hygiene/precautions over the last couple of generations has led to more individuals having never been exposed to the virus (like me!), hence the rise in genital HSV-1 cases (oral infection largely affords immunity to Type 1 genital infection).
