Oral Issues with EBV

Hi Guys,

I was diagnosed with EBV back in Sept. 2019 & wonder if anyone has had any oral/mouth problems with:

  • Any irritation / tingling / burning sensation on the roof of the mouth & tongue
  • White Tongue
  • Bad taste sensation anywhere in the mouth

Thanks and good luck to all of us fighting this virus

Yes, I've had all that and more. Sensitive teeth, and abscess on my wisdom tooth that hurt like hell.

yeah I also have all those symptoms even though everything else has improved. The white tongue is a condition called oral hairy leukoplakia, which is caused by the ebv. Funny thing is they don't typically treat EBV with anything but if you see a doctor about OHL they will treat you with antiviral drugs. So for me if its not gone in another 3 months I'm going to see if i can get on some antivirals, which would most likely help with all other symptoms.

Thanks Neenie & Alton for your replies,

How long have you guys had these oral symptoms for ?

I've had them since I was diagnosed, in one form or another. It's a relief to hear you guys have experienced similar as these type of issues don't seem to be the norm.

I've been checked out by the dentist & periodontist, but they only found redness or swelling on the tissue of the roof of the mouth. No surprise that they have no knowledge of any link between EBV/Mono & any oral issues.
