Hi janie, just noticed you had not received a reply on this. The reason for this is I think this is one of the anomalies of this Web Site being based in the UK and occasionally it takes regular Forum readers elsewhere in the world to receive their email alerts and then respond.

I am sure some of the wonderful Ladies on here will soon respond - if not I would suggest starting a new Forum thread in a day or two ....

I was diagnosed 24 Dec 2021 and because of Christmas shutdown I've now been able to organise and attend appointments as I was referred to a specialist. I had a biopsy to confirm the same .

I can now take my symptoms back years. Spicy foods burning my mouth, itchy skin so i think i have the skin issue . My Dr told me it was hives and to take antihistamine, I asked pharmacists and Dr's if its safe. all four told it was fine and also my dental specialist. I've been taking them for nearly seven years. As i continue research i can see symptoms.. I was also on BP meds which I no longer take; prescribed after my late husband passed away 10 years ago. So there's another big stress contributor!

What you describe about the rough patches is what i had early on. I dismissed it at the time. My dental specialist also asked me that very question about rough patches. I find drinking ginger tea made with fresh ginger helps sooth as its also in my throat and i do need something for my throat.

a note.. don't use mouth washes with alcohol or mint as these do not help and my Specialist noticed a notable difference within a two week period.

i believe my issue is an allergy to wheat as I have removed all wheat from diet and id not realised that its hidden in many ingredients here in Australia. A big shock to me. I've had one ulcer on my gum and got on to this very quickly and it was gone before it became too painful. Mouth wash and ulcer gel helped. My specialist gave me a script two weeks ago which is stronger than what can be bought over the counter if required.

    I hope this helps Janie!

    hi janie27576

I dont know if my knowledge will be of any use to you, as it is limited.. however going off your responses, or lack of, perhaps it is not so common to have the two overlap after all?

This is what I know, I am 38 and have had LS since I turned 30. at some stage in between, a few years ago my dentist noticed some white streaks/patch inside my mouth adj to my back Molar. dentist said to keep an eye on it for any changes, but most likely it would be irritation from contact with large amalgam filling covering that last tooth. I went back 3yrs later (bad, bad girl, I know!) and she mentioned it again, and in comparison (photo documented) she thought it seemed slightly more prominent so she made a referral to oral surgeon through public system. They saw me relatively fast considering covid health delays and to cut it short a biopsy confirmed that it seems consistent with oral lichen planus.

however, I dont regularly get any ulceration or have any other irritation in my mouth. it doesn't feel rough to me in that area and it doesn't cause me any pain at all. all I was worried about was oral cancer as I had smoked ciggerettes, on and off, mostly on for the previous 15yrs. I quit permantly after that anyway. unfortunately none of that has helped in the slightest with the LS. asides from perhaps highlight the correlation between LS and LP, my dermatologist told me there is suspicion they overlap.

one other thing, I realised too later that I had suddenly developed an annoyingly persistent scalp issue around the same time as the LS. Itchy scalp with scabby lumps I could feel and scaley, flaky dandruff. always worst when I let hair get oilyier . maybe that could have been another sign?

Anyway, get someone (GP/specialist/any dr) to refer you to an oral specialist if your worried. but I think that the white streaks or patch is the hallmark sign they will look for first.

I hope in that your symptoms sound different to what I have described, that it means your cursed only with one not two lichens.

    Sending hope your way.x
