Oral Lichen Planus flare

I have had olp on my gums for 9 years. It hasn't had too many flares till the last year or so. Right now I have an area that has been giving me problems on and off for a year and it is doing something I haven't seen before.I would say it is erosive, but I am wondering if that is what it is. Has anyone had the problem where the gum is peeling? I can see a line of white skin that is near the gumline under 2 teeth. It seems to peel off and the skins is a bit redder than usual. By the end of the night after eating and brushing all day it is almost clear, but then stars over again. I was considering it may be thrush, but it is only in this one spot and it does look like a line as if it is peeling. It is a lot more tender or painful when I eat. Any suggestion to help it heal?

I didn't mention that at the same time my burning mouth symptoms are worse and I got a canker sore also...It seems as if my symptoms are always worse in the spring...

I started out about 12 years ago with burning mouth syndrome. Interesting that you notice it's worse in the spring....

I wasn't real clear there.. I notice my worst time with the olp is in the spring..At least 3 years that I can remember anyway.  But it maybe both. I haven't paid to much attention as I get a lot more bms flares than olp. It mostly affects my toungue. I wonder if I have allergies that may lower my immune in the spring, which could make things flare worse then..who knows.

Hi Kay sorry to read about flare up sounds nasty. I would make

an appointment with your dental practitioners as soon as so

you can find what exactly your dealing with and get professional advice. Good luck, maybe let me know how you are getting on.

Thanks Annie! I do have a cleaning at my Dentist set up for next week. It may turn into just a look at my gums.. Debating on trying to get into my oral surgeon sooner, just to be sure it isn't anything new.

    Hi,

yes i had a problem with on section of my gum bleeding due to peeling away. Cloebetisol proportionate ointment help that.

did you ever get a definite biopsy done to verify you have OLP?

Like you, it's difficult to brush my teeth, eat, etc. do you have any problems with your tongue?

Thanks for your reply! When I went back to my oral surgeon, he was convinced it was an olp flare and didn't think a biopsy was necessary. He said if I wanted one he would do one.. It was not something I want to go through unless he felt I should have one. I did try 2 different topical steroids that didn't help. They did cause Petechiae on my gums that my dentist was worried about. Ended up getting blood work to make sure it wasn't something else causing it. It went away a few weeks after I stopped the steroids. That flare settled down some a couple months later, but it is the same area that is irritated this time. I do have burning mouth syndrome that mostly affects my toungue, but doesn't have any visible olp on it.

Oh no dont tell me there is more to look forward to with this olp.  I have not seen it..yet, on mine.  Actually for the past two months or so, it appears that it is completely gone, my gums are again a pinkish red color and virtually no signs of the white lines or white skins on the sides.  I do not know why.  But i am also not cheering too much because I know it could (or is) only temporary.  Anyway, if i were you i would not stress over it too much, just keep a clean mouth as much as possible.

I have a few small spots but the biggest is under my tongue. It looks like a white, soft scab. About 3/4" long X 1/8" wide. It will peel and bleed, revealing a bright red spot underneath. Then it is like it "heals" to make the white, soft scab again. But I know it is not a scab but a sore from the OLP (what is it? Like a growth of something? Is it skin cells flaking off? I don't even know...) I was given a prescription for a corticosteroid mouthwash that I used for 2 weeks. It seemed to reduce the swelling at the back of my tongue but did nothing for the sores. Last Wed., my Dr. injected my tongue, into the sores, in 7 spots with a corticosteroid. Very unpleasant to have done...felt like the needles were going straight through my tongue. And so far, a week later, I see no difference in my sores. The biggest sore was bleeding this morning, after I ate soggy cereal for breakfast. Is there a way to prevent this from getting worse? What daily habits do I need to do to make sure it doesn't get worse (Right now I only brush morning and evening and floss after every meal).

As far as my mouth, mine is all on my gums.. Although my toungue has a burning feeling often. Right now it  is like white skin that seems to peel off an area under 2 teeth. I have tried lots of different toothpaste and gels. One I was using and am going to order again, in case that is part of my problem, is a tooth ge,l actually for toddlers. It has no flavor. It is a clear gel with xylitol so it is sweet, but no other flavor. Very few ingredients. Both my dentists told me to try gentle toothpastes. I also use an extra soft toothbrush. I am trying to use a turmeric supplement, as I have read that can help olp. Will let you know if I ever find something I think has helped! Hope yours improves soon!
